Northern Light Composites

There are thousands of drifts in the sea, and still being produced, that are thrown away at the end of their lives because they are not recyclable. Fabio Bignolini, Andrea Paduano and Piernicola Paoletti decided to get to work to solve this problem, and from their efforts in 2019 Northern Light Composites was born.

An environmentally friendly boat: it can be done

Northern Light Composites, an innovative Italian startup, wants to prove that it is possible to sail with a hull produced with respect for the environment and workers. Not only that, because when the hull is no longer used and becomes waste, it will not simply be used as inert matter. The composite they made, and use to produce the boats, uses plant fibers, the core is PET, and the resin used(Elium) is highly recyclable. The main problem with fiberglass boats, in fact, is the use of vinylester resins that cannot be separated from the composite at the end of their life. Northern Light Composites’ resin and composite separate smoothly and ensure full recyclability of materials.

Two projects have already been launched

In 2020 Northern Light Composites decided to launch its first two projects. The first is Ecoprimus, a small boat designed for young sailors and sailing schools, renamed“Optimist 2.0.” Ecoracer 769, on the other hand, is the name of the second project launched by the startup, which was designed by Matteo Polli. It is a racing prototype designed for ORC Sportboat competitions, thus designed to be sustainable and environmentally friendly, but also fast.
