Welcome to the special section “BAM 35 Years.” We are presenting “cult” articles from the Motor Boats archive, starting in 1990. A journey through time among stories unobtainable today, even in the great sea of the internet! A dive into the world of epic moments in motor boating. We begin with one of the stories we were most passionate about.
The tiger of the sea
From Boats to Motor 1998, No. 5, June, pp. 54-55.
From America comes one of the fastest boats ever. A fast commuter to run on the water at 90 knots!
Aggressive and very fast, just like a tiger, is Cigarette‘s new forty-two-footer. Her name is Tiger and is a fast commuter, designed and built with the same philosophy as the racing hulls, with sleek, clean lines, no handrails or stanchions, and even retractable navigation lights to achieve maximum aerodynamics when sailing. The colorful patterned decorations on the broadside and deck, typical of all Cigarette hulls, are certainly not likely to make this new U.S. bolide go unnoticed. High performance is provided by two gasoline engines, MerCruiser or Hawk, with powers ranging from 500 up to 1,000 horsepower each. In the version with the 700-hp Hawks and Mercury 3A Speedmaster transmissions, the Tiger quickly reaches a speed of 70 knots and sails in absolute stability and safety at 56 knots at cruising speed. With the maximum engine, 2000, hp total, the Tiger reaches close to 90 knots, which corresponds to over 160 km/h, undoubtedly ensuring great excitement for speed lovers. A good range is guaranteed by more than 1,000 liters of fuel. Also racing is the dashboard of controls complete with all engine control instruments, which, in order to allow the pilot quick examinations even at high speeds, are oversized by 25 percent, compared to traditional ones.
The Tiger’s dashboard is designed to allow an immediate view of all instrumentation even at high speeds.
Gps and electronic compass are standard. In addition, a control panel with compass, fuel gauge and chart table has been placed in front of the co-pilot’s seat. Behind the wraparound sports seats reserved for the two drivers, the Tiger offers the classic full-width sofa and, aft, above the engine cove, the sunbathing area. The passage from the cockpit to the bow is facilitated by the presence of some steps placed between the two dashboards. Despite its decidedly racing vocation, this 42-footer offers habitable interiors, offered in three different versions: Full, Cover Girl and Haft. The most complete is, as the name implies, the Full, which features a comfortable V-shaped forward berth, a dinette with two opposing settees served by a center table, two hanging lockers, an icebox and a sink.
