Beware of Medicane the Mediterranean hurricanes

From Boats by Motor 2018, no. 2, August, pp. 130.

The weather is changing and the Mediterranean is also at risk of hurricanes, or rather Medicane. The term Medicane (mix of Mediterranean Hurricane) refers to a low-pressure system characterized by heavy rainfall and intense winds, in which it is possible to recognize a small and well-delineated “eye.” Such vortices are not uncommon in our basin, but neither are they very frequent: one of the latest is “Vega” and dates back to November 7, 2014. It interested the arm of the sea between Malta and Lampedusa. II strongest was instead “Zeo’ which in December 2005 did a lot of damage and even casualties in Sicily. Medicanes do not reach the strength and size of tropical hurricanes but their similarity in shape is incredible. Medicanes, they seem to evolve just like normal hurricanes and draw energy from the warm sea. In short, there is not much to fear, but this summer always keep an eye on the weather before you set sail.
