A few years ago it seemed impossible to think of a boat that could be opened. It caused a sensation for the Italian company Besenzoni when it introduced Balcony in 2009: it was the system that allowed the broadside to open up and give the owner an exclusive terrace overlooking the sea. Two years later the Wider shipyard unveiled its futuristic 42-footer of incredible design. A walkaround with a set-back cockpit and an opening center cockpit that can increase the maximum beam from 3.50 to 6.60 meters: double that. It has been about ten years since their inception, and today “boats that open” are causing less of a stir, although they certainly attract a lot of interest. Truly versatile and with the ability to double or significantly increase the space on board, these solutions are often distinctive of smaller vessels where space is at a premium.
