At METS 2022 in Amsterdam, Aceleron, a start-up company that brings to market Essential, a cobalt-free lithium-iron-phosphate battery system with replaceable parts, made its debut. In fact, it has a structure that is not welded, but is assembled by compression. What does this mean? The system is undoubtedly simpler to maintain, a faulty cell is easily changed, and in case of problems the entire battery does not need to be replaced. In addition, this battery is designed to fit into a circular economy with as long a life path as possible. For this it was honored at the Dame Awards by winning the Environmental Design Award.

Being made up of easily replaceable parts this battery also allows you to go to work on what is the end-of-life of the battery. How it is quickly said: when battery cells have exhausted their charging cycles, losing the effectiveness required of a transport vehicle, for example, it is possible to replace and upgrade only the cells and then reuse them in different applications.

Aceleron’s features include Bluetooth and CanBus connectivity. Aceleron’s Essential turns out to be particularly popular in the boat world for certain features that have even earned it a prestigious award. In particular, the need for better maintainability of all equipment to reduce unnecessary waste and loss of resources, a theme that Essential fully addresses.

Now more than ever, as the energy transition progresses, the questions become deeper. It is not enough to “go electric” to be carbon neutral, that should be clear by now. There is also a need to think about the life cycle of the components that are part of an electrical system. What does this mean? Also create batteries that are always usable over time, so as to avoid disposal and management problems that in many cases, to date, are still an unknown.

Aceleron addresses not only the nautical world, but a potentially universal audience. Founded by Dr. Amrit Chandan and Carlton Cummins, Aceleron is going to market by focusing on what they call“the world’s first sustainable lithium-ion battery.” This is because it is both repairable and upgradeable due to its patented compression technology.
