The APBA Gold Cup Race is one of the most iconic and prestigious events in the world of powerboating, a symbol of speed, skill and tradition that originated in the United States more than 100 years ago. Organized by the American Power Boat Association (APBA), this is one of the oldest powerboat races.
It is actually, according to the American Power Boat Association, the oldest active motorboat trophy in the world!
The origins of the race
The history of the Gold Cup began way back in 1904, when it was first organized by the APBA as a competition for high-speed boats-the intent was to create a trophy that represented the pinnacle of American powerboating. Since its inception, the race has been a benchmark for major racing boats, becoming a symbol of excellence in the field.
The route and the competition
The Gold Cup is a race in which participants compete on high-speed circuits, usually located on inland waters, such as lakes or rivers. The competition is for H1 Unlimited class boats, powered by helicopter-derived turbine engines and capable of speeds in excess of 130 knots. The races feature a series of elimination rounds, with the fastest boats competing in elimination rounds until a winner is determined.
The Gold Cup is not only a test of speed, but also a challenge of skill in which racers must deal with the difficulties of the courses, adapt to weather conditions especially wind, which can affect performance by interfering with the aerodynamics of the boats. The 2025 edition is scheduled for July 25-27 on the banks of the Columbia River in Kennewick, Washington state. During the weekend, boats that wrote the history of the trophy, such as the so-called Thunderboats of the 1960s, powered by 12-cylinder airplane engines, will compete in addition to the Gold Cup.
American-style speed!
Over the years, the APBA Gold Cup Race has had a significant impact on American culture, becoming not only a sporting competition but also an event that gathers crowds of fans, powerboat enthusiasts and tourists. The Gold Cup races are a celebration of speed, technological innovation and the courage of the racers, but also a display of community spirit, with side events including fairs, exhibitions and parades in perfect Yankee style. Gold Cup winners rightfully enter the legend of the sport, becoming true stars in the powerboat scene. Many internationally renowned drivers have triumphed in this competition, making it even more prestigious over time.
