Blue Flag 2020: these are the top 407 beaches and 75 landings in Italy. During the lockdown, nature took back many spaces where before man had almost driven it to disappear. Dolphins and blue sharks have been spotted in many ports across Italy, swimming carefree among the trappe near the dock.
Italy must now restart by putting its best foot forward, especially in tourism. One place to start will certainly be the quality of one’s sea and coastline. The best places? Here they are!
Blue Flag 2020:how many blue flags exist?
There are two types of Blue Flags:
- That of beaches certifies the quality of bathing waters and lidos.
- Blue flag of marinas ensures clean waters adjacent to ports.
In Italy, water quality is certified by each region’s ARPA, which is the regional environmental protection agency. All with the support of the Ministry of Health.
What are the parameters for allocation
Awarding the blue flag, which is valid for only one year (and can be revoked at any time), is done if the applying location meets 30 imperative parameters, plus 3 “guiding” ones. There is a questionnaire for the individual candidate to answer, but then it is up to a Technical Judging Committee that analyzes a whole range of elements, data and material to decide whether or not to award.
In addition to “excellent” waters, the implementation of good environmental practices, through multiple education, training and information activities for sustainability, is crucial to obtaining the Blue Flag.
In Italy there are virtuous cases such as
Marina Cala de’ Medici
or the
Marina of Varazze
which have been awarded the coveted flag for 10 and 12 consecutive years, respectively. How do they do it? In addition to water quality, with the all kinds of initiatives such as environmental actions, information campaigns, projects, and in-depth studies on marine wildlife.
