As part of the third edition of the Suzuki Green Friday project, Suzuki Marine Italia raised €15,136 to be donated to the project“lavalacqua” – Blue-Friday Mussels as Indicators of Sea Health.
You have probably heard of Suzuki’s microplastic filtering system, the so-called “microplastic collector“, often known as a “water wash.” It is a filter, placed in the cooling circuit of the engine that, as the water passes through, captures microplastics contained in the sea. A simple technology that, in its own small way is also quite “effective,” available on outboards from 100 to 140 horsepower. In the wake of this project, Suzuki Marine Italia decided to allocate 15,136 euros, raised during Green Friday, to the placement of mussels(bivalve mollusks) in the Portofino Marine Protected Area in Liguria.

Mussels that “wash” the water
Just like the “micro-plastic collector” system, mussels also play a similar role. To be fair, it is very likely that the Hamamatsu company’s engineers got the idea precisely from observing the role of these living things. In fact, being filter feeders, mussels remove harmful substances, including dispersed microplastics from water around the world, purifying it.

function as indicators of the health of the sea. The inclusion of new specimens will go a long way toward expanding populations of bivalve mollusks in Liguria’s three marine protected areas. These organisms will serve the function as bioindicators to monitor possible risk factors for marine biodiversity. The goal? Having an important tool, since they can provide an accurate overview of the marine ecosystem in which they reside.
The project is developed in collaboration with the Experimental Zooprophylactic Institute of Piedmont Liguria and Valle d’Aosta and involves the Marine Protected Areas of Portofino, Bergeggi Island and Cinque Terre, as well as the Italian Federation of Sport Fishing and Underwater Activities – FIPSAS, of which Suzuki is a partner.
