Maxi-ribs, a family of boats that has been expanding for several years now. In practice, they are also often called some craft for which the term“Rigid Inflatable Boat,” for which RIB is the acronym, is not 100 percent accurate. The reason? Trivially, they do not have inflatable tubulars, but a closed-cell fender that surrounds them, like a large cooper. In practice, then, they are boats, but with usage characteristics that are closer to the world of inflatable boats than boats. Today we look at two, very special ones, each one special in its own category. Let’s talk about the Skipper BSK 42NC, a monstrous bolide that, powered to its maximum, can reach 90 knots! We, in the video, did “only” 50.
Skipper BSK 42NC – VIDEO
We tested the Skipper BSK 42NC maxi-rib : a 12+ meter maxi-rib made to run in all conditions. A craft that, with the right motorization (4 Mercury Racing 500 hp outboards), is capable of reaching 90 knots! The configuration under test included a pair of Volvo Penta diesel inboards rated at 440 hp each, so much “quieter” than the maximum allowed, yet it took us over 53 knots, with 6 people on board and 5 feet of long wave. Here’s what it looks like and how much it costs.
It looks like a full-fledged inflatable boat and, instead, is approved as a boat: here’s why! 👇 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wU7KzJERrm4&t=57s
MAGAZZÙ MX-16 – VIDEO
Boat or dinghy? Magazzù’s new flagship gives up the inflatable tubulars, but not the essence of the maxi-ribs that have been so successful in recent years. Another treat? It’s outboard, although it doesn’t look it with a very interesting solution at the stern. Here’s what the new flagship looks like and how much it costs. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O8ii01YZdBc&t=119s
