Founded in 1922 by master shipwright Giuseppe Patrone, known as Bepin, the Patrone shipyard is one of the storied realities of Italian boating. Well known are its Dinghys, those sailing dinghies with clinker planking that have trained generations of champions, as well as its traditional Genoese gozzi le pilotine. Skillfully combining technology and tradition, Patrone now produces a range of fiberglass boats with wood finishes. Artisan-style construction also allows the Ligurian shipyard to make custom boats. Anticipating an increase in production from 25 to 40 units per year, a new 2,000-square-meter factory, located near the Albenga highway exit, was recently added to the Ceriale warehouses, where the construction of the larger boats will later be relocated.
Project:â—Šâ—Šâ—Šâ—Š
Designed by Moreno Patrone, the yard’s current owner, the 25 Open retains the charm of the traditional Genoese gozzi, with the substantial difference of a planing, rather than displacement, hull, characterized by three support skids on each side. However, the motorization remains the classic inboard with shaftline transmissions. The boat, designed for coastal cruising, is thus able to provide rapid displacement. while preserving the deck space that is the main peculiarity of goiters. The width of the sections and low center of gravity also provide high lateral stability, an essential requirement both in terms of safety and comfort when sailing (reduced roll).

Construction: â—Š â—Šâ—Šâ—Š
Solid laminate for the hull, sandwich for the deck: the construction of the 25 Open aims to keep the weights up while respecting those qualities of solidity and durability common to all Patrone models. The framework consists of 6 spars and as many as 16 stringers, one every 50 cm, made of ash and fir wood covered with fiberglass fabrics and facetted directly to the hull. The resin used is of the polyester type. The deck is covered in solid iroko planks with black rubber coments. Underdeck, bulkheads, furniture, and dunnage are made of mahogany plywood, a workmanship that gives added strength to the product.

Blanket:â—Šâ—Šâ—Šâ—Š
A typical pontooned gozzo, the Patrone 25 Open features large, clutter-free surfaces, just like traditional fishing boats. The iroko floor covering makes for safe passage even with a wet deck. The cockpit houses a U-shaped bench seat that follows the rounded perimeter of the stern. Below the center seat is a locker, which is useful for storing those items of equipment that need to be close at hand at all times. The central helm console, from which there is a wide view even when seated, is furnished with a three-seater settee fixed above the large hatch for access to the engine cove (190 x 132 cm). Behind it, another 90 x 84-cm dunnage opening allows inspection of sea intakes, rudders, badges and batteries. The slightly raised deck has a completely free area of no less than 7 square meters to be used for sunbathing. Optional cushioning.

Interior: â—Š â—Šâ—Šâ—Š
Well-designed, the cabin offers a spacious V-shaped forward berth that can be converted into a double, a galley block with a 2-burner stove equipped with a pot holder, refrigerator, sink, and bottle holder. Two settees measuring 103 cm and 75 cm complete the furnishings. Generous toilet dimensions (1.20 x 1.00 m) with toilet, sink and cabinet.

The two stainless steel fuel tanks of 200 liters each are built by the shipyard itself. To improve comfort at sea, the engine room is lined with effective soundproof insulation and the exhausts are fitted with silencers. The 12-volt electrical system has a switchboard arranged in the cabin, with consumers protected by circuit breakers. Cables and conduits are made of fireproof materials. The fresh water system supplies the utilities for the bathroom, galley, and the shower located in the cockpit.

Patrone 25 – Motorization: â—Šâ—Šâ—Š
There is a wide choice of single- or twin-engine engines from 180 up to 330 hp. The test specimen was equipped with two Volvo Penta 150-hp engines.
Performance: â—Šâ—Šâ—Š
Ease of steering and stability in tight turns are the two aspects we most appreciated in the test. Excellent, for a goiter, performance as well, but at top speed the sailing was a bit “wet.”
In 1999, the Patrone 25 Open was being sold, with standard equipment and Volvo penta 2 x 150 hp engine, for Lire 150,250,000.
