Looking under the dunnage of a Sunseeker, from the gritty Hawk 38 to the large yachts in the 100 line, there is a technical secret that saves the environment and your wallet. For a full 20 years, the British giant has fitted Wavestream bilge filters manufactured by Wave International as standard.

Clean bilge (and no fines): the Sunseeker “secret” that everyone needs

Why should this choice also affect those who sail on a boat? The answer is twofold: love of the sea and the environment, certainly, but also the need to avoid hefty fines.

The risk of “automatic discharge”

Every boater knows the problem: something always ends up in the bilge. Some water, condensation residue, but often also traces of engine oil, diesel fuel or paint particles. When the automatic bilge pump kicks in, whether you’re at the dock or in the roadstead, it drains everything outboard. The trouble is, it only takes a single drop of oil in half a liter of water to generate pollution of 40 parts per million (ppm). The law is strict: the limit is usually 15 ppm, but it often drops to 5 ppm. In addition, it is very difficult to hide, since all you need to do is follow the classic iridescent trail, and the penalties can be severe.

The simple solution

As Sunseeker (an “early adopter” who has been installing them on its boats for 20 years) guessed, the solution is a dedicated filter. The Wavestream system installs between the pump and the sea discharge-it is compact and easy to manage (just change the cartridge). Wave International’s technology, which is celebrating 25 years in business, can trap oil, diesel and even microplastics and antifouling particles that come off the bilge, discharging only clean water into the sea.

Installing such a filter is not only an ethical matter of not polluting the seas we love; it is low-cost insurance against accidental spills that, with today’s regulations, are not tolerated.
