Dometic Marine has just unveiled a new power-assisted electronic wheelhouse that complements the mechanical one.
Dometic electronic outboard steering system
Easy to fit on most outboard motors and integrated into existing wheelhouses, Dometic’s latest innovation provides easy and convenient electronic steering to outboard boats with mechanical wheelhouses.
Dometic Marine has developed power-assisted electronic steering for powerboats with outboard engines of all kinds. This new system is designed for engines from 90 to 200 horsepower. This technology integrates with any of Seastar’s mechanical rack-and-pinion and rotary wheelhouses, with the advantage of avoiding the need to replace the wheelhouse already installed. It is compatible with standard and tilt steering boxes.
Dometic electronic wheelhouse: how it works
As the company reports, Dometic’s power-assisted electronic wheelhouse is an easy-to-install solution that eliminates strain on the steering wheel, for driving boats with 90-200hp outboard motors and classic mechanical wheelhouses.
Electronic power steering is easily mounted on most outboard motors and integrated into the boat’s mechanical steering system. It is able to provide quick rudder response and reduced effort while sailing. Once installed, the mechanical steering cable operates only the servo unit, while the electronic actuator reduces the motor load.
The differences with other electronic wheelhouses
This system is different from other electronic wheelhouses on the market. In fact, it does not increase the load on the cable or mechanical box with the goal of providing durable and reliable performance at sea. In the event of an emergency, that is, if by any chance the power-assisted unit should suddenly stop working, the safety system provides a return to mechanical steering, preventing loss of steering of the boat.
Dometic electronic wheelhouse: how to install it
This system is designed to allow easy assembly by dealers, mechanics, or end users. It is designed to be easily integrated into existing wheelhouses. Power-assisted electronic steering aims to improve the driving experience. Designed for plug-and-play installation, it is suitable for both aftermarket and OEM sales channels.
Production of the new servo-assisted electronic steering system is scheduled for early 2021.
