On Feb. 12, the House of Representatives approved the amendment whereby two-stroke outboard engines with 900 displacement with direct injection can also be driven without a license. In essence, one could be close to a positive resolution of the “soap opera” involving Evinrude E-Tec 40, the only engines to require a license because, precisely, fuel-injected, two-stroke engines with a displacement of 864 cc. Evinrude E-tec 40 horsepower: license yes or no?

Do you need a license to drive an Evinrude E-Tec 40? For now, yes! Until the day after publication in the Official Gazette, nothing is valid, and as of now there is nothing in the Gazette. But let’s go in order. The measure was included within the “Milleproroghe” legislative package. By Feb. 29, it is expected to reach the Senate and then become law.

The measure, once approved, will be final(no more extensions or other temporary solutions). As of now, however, nothing is certain, at least until the “Milleproroghe” is passed and published in the Official Gazette. At that point it will be necessary to wait one more day and to be able to drive without a license with an Evinrude E-Tec 40-horsepower engine. Before that time a driver’s license remains mandatory.

For whom a boating license is mandatory today

  • Engines larger than 750 cc if carbureted or fuel-injected two-stroke;
  • 1,000 cc engines if carbureted or fuel-injected four-stroke outboard;
  • engines to 1,300 cc if carbureted or fuel-injected four-stroke within board,
  • 2,000-cc engines if non-supercharged diesel cycle, or 1,300-cc engines if supercharged diesel cycle, however, with a power output of more than 30 kW or 40.8 hp.

Penalties:

If you put yourself in command of a boat without a boating license-and therefore also in case of a license not obtained, revoked or not validated for lack of requirements, suspended or withdrawn-you are subject to the administrative penalty of paying a sum of 2755 euros to 11017 euros. The penalty is doubled in the case of commanding or conducting a recreational vessel
