Excosystem

Excosystem is an all-Italian company with more than 50 years of experience in the safety sector, particularly at the forefront of fuel tank protection. It is in this context that their flagship product was born, an aluminum alloy grating that, in the event of a fire, prevents the explosion of tanks filled with any type of fuel, liquid or gaseous. It sounds like magic, but countless tests, conducted by certification bodies, such as RINA, or even military commissions using it, certify beyond reasonable doubt the benefits of this solution.

What is Excosystem

What, practically speaking, is Excosystem? It can be had in the form of spheres of filaments curled up on themselves, for small tanks that have only the fuel cap as access, or as a honeycomb-like net wrapped in rolls, where the tank is large enough to allow manhole clearance. Although visually it may look like a considerable mass, these filaments are less than a tenth of a millimeter thick, so the reduction in tank capacity is only around 1.5 percent of the total, and the weight around 40 g per liter of volume. What principle does it exploit? Since aluminum is extremely conductive, the almost instantaneous dissipation of heat does not allow flames to reach critical temperatures. No magic then, just applied physics.

The filaments, less than 1/10th of a mm thick, reduce tank capacity by only about 1.5 percent with a weight around 40 g per liter of volume. Chosen for units that do “heavy duty” activities, such as the Novamarine below, they have many advantages for recreational use as well

But the benefits do not end there. Since the inside of the tank is practically saturated by this very dense network of aluminum filaments, it almost completely eliminates the problem of sloshing, that is, the natural free movement of the liquid mass inside the tank. For the larger ones this greatly reduces the change in stability, but for all, indeed perhaps even more so for the smaller ones, the reduction in shaking, a virtually constant element at sea, further reduces evaporation. Already minimized by the huge condensation surface area offered by the aluminum filaments.

More safety in the boat

This is perhaps the greatest benefit to any boater, especially those with gasoline tanks. A laboratory report certifies the almost complete abatement of emitted vapors. Saturation of closed boat compartments with vapors coming from tanks is perhaps one of the most common causes of accidents when it comes to fuel hazards. The drastic reduction of these explosive emissions is in itself a significant increase in on-board safety.

The aluminum filaments, below, dissipate heat by not allowing the flames to reach critical temperatures. Pictured above is a Novamarine vehicle using this technology in its tanks.

As for compatibility, it is guaranteed for all kinds of tank materials, including steel. It is maintenance-free, so once installed it is almost eternal. In this regard, the installation is carried out by Excosystem technicians, but they are also collaborating and training personnel at construction sites throughout Italy, to shorten the distance to every boater. The only restriction concerns, of course, the fuel gauge, which, if it is not already, must be any one with a sliding float but, in turn, must be protected inside a tube, a modification that is easily retrofitted anyway.

How much does Excosystem cost

Finally, the question everyone will be asking: how much does it cost? Obviously it depends on the type of installation, but we are talking about the price of a little more than a full tank. All this with a great increase in safety, especially for those with a gas tank: an attractive investment.
