We are at a new turning point for the Hanse Group with all its brands including Fjord, Sealine and Ryck. New change of ownership is on the horizon after an agreement was reached on May 18 between the fund that currently owns the group, namely Aurelius Group, German entrepreneur Andreas Müller, and Hanjo Runde Group CEO.

The two are aiming to take majority shares in the Hanse Group to breathe new life into the shipyard after a difficult period. After all, the potential of the German shipyard’s brands is definitely high and, above all, capable of covering an important slice of the market.

Who is the buyer of the Hanse Group

The group’s latest CEO, Hanjo Runde, is expected to join the revitalization effort by supporting entrepreneur Andreas Müller, who heads Alois Müller GmbH, a Bavarian company with a turnover of 71 million euros (2022 figure).

The company is active in the fields of building technology, air conditioning, plant engineering and sustainable energy solutions. A reserved figure with little inclination to the spotlight, his name rarely appears even in the local press.

Everyone hopes that through this new financial and strategic transaction Hanse will be able to grow globally. However, a number of critical points remain, including the announced job cuts at both the shipyard’s German headquarters and its Polish branch: the change of ownership of the German group will be accompanied by a reduction of 200 jobs out of the current 1,500 employed in sailboat construction. Further negotiations on the transaction for a final purchase agreement are therefore expected.

The recent history of the Hanse Group

The history of the Hanse Group founded by Michael Schmidt is one of successes, ups and downs. In 2011 Schmidt left the group by selling 64.67 percent of his shares to Aurelius, one of the largest pan-European investment funds, for 27 million euros.

The transaction led Hanse Group to be the world’s third-largest marine group for pleasure boats. But despite the fact that in the following years the company acquired and consolidated other major brands, such as Moody, Dehler, Privilege (Sail), Sealine, Fjord, and Ryck (engine), the German giant has never been able to express its full potential and win a role as a true market leader.

What Andreas Müller and Hanjo Runde Group CEO will be called upon to do.
