On the occasion of World Biodiversity Day, FPT Industrial, a brand of Iveco Group, a global leader in the design, manufacture and sale of propulsion systems, provided the non-profit Tethys Institute with two of its environmentally friendly engines. The Tethys Institute is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the conservation of the marine environment. Its research has now resulted in the largest dataset and longest historical series of scientific data on cetaceans in the entire Mediterranean Sea. To carry out its activities, the Institute uses Pelagos, a 21-m motorsailer named after the Pelagos Sanctuary, the Cetacean Sanctuary, a vast marine protected area located in the waters of the Ligurian and Upper Tyrrhenian Seas.

The engines supplied by FPT are two N67s, of 6.7 L displacement in 6 in-line cylinders, capable of delivering a maximum power output of 280 hp and torque of 970 Nm. They were chosen for their durability characteristics, essential for continuous and intense activities such as those required by continuous monitoring, as well as their reliability, which allows simplified maintenance with oil and filter change intervals of up to 600 hours, to minimize downtime and costs. Also very important is quietness, a feature in common with all of FPT Industrial’s marine engines.

After all, the best advertisement for NEF series engines are the sales numbers: more than two million units worldwide, in recreational and professional marine applications, four different displacements and in both mechanical and electronic versions. In addition, the lines at the Turin plant dedicated to engine marinization meet every customization need of customers.

Through its ePowertrain division dedicated to electric propulsion systems, the company is accelerating toward zero net carbon mobility with electric transmissions, battery packs, and battery management systems. This offering, combined with a strong focus on research and development, makes FPT Industrial one of the world’s leading players in propulsion systems and solutions for industrial use.
