Mooring the boat has always been one of the great obstacles of those who go to sea. Not only inexperience, which alone can limit us in our exits, but also the need to have help in these phases. Thinking of going out alone or perhaps with young children happens to postpone going out for fear of re-entry. Once again it is technology that comes to our aid.
Garmin Marine Italy
unveiled the new Garmin Surround View system that uses six cameras installed flush on the hull and provides a 360-degree view.

Garmin Surround View

Garmin Surround View with its six cameras helps the owner or captain quickly visualize everything around their boat during mooring or difficult maneuvers. The inspiration is clear and comes from the automotive world. We interviewed Carlo Brevini, Sales and Marketing Manager of Garmin Marine Italy, who explained how this Garmin innovation works.

Garmin Surround View – What it looks like

The Garmin Surround View system consists of six 1080p cameras: one camera on the bow, one on the stern, and two cameras installed on the starboard and port side. When the system is active, it provides a 360-degree top-down real-time view of the entire vessel directly to compatible Garmin chartplotters.

This will enable the owner to view, in addition to the 360° view, one or two cameras at the same time. The system also provides a number of augmented reality features to help avoid possible collisions:

  • Visual Bumper – provides a visual indicator, at a user-configurable distance, around the boat to show the owner when any non-water object such as docks or piers crosses that barrier. This way we can always know what certainty we are at from a given point
  • Distance Markers – creates visual references (augmented reality) around the boat on the monitor to help those steering the boat determine distance when maneuvering in tight spaces
  • Bird’s-eye view – The bird’s-eye view, through the six cameras, provides a 360-degree view around the boat.
  • Multi Video – View one or two cameras and bird’s-eye images simultaneously
  • Low profile – Low-profile cameras blend functionality with a modern design aesthetic

Weighing less than 700g between steel and polycarbonate, recessed installation during the construction process ensures that the cameras are safe and maintenance-free.

Garmin Surround View – For What Boats

Designed to fit virtually any boat, the system is compatible with Garmin chartplotters or MFDs, including the GPSMAP 8400/8600 series, the GPSMAP 7×3/9×3/12×3 series, or the Volvo Penta Glass Cockpit System.
Garmin’s Surround View system is available for purchase. You can see it live during during the Genoa Boat Show, September 16-21, 2021.
