Girbau 38
A perfect example of a “crossover,” Girbau 38 combines classic Mediterranean forms with a contemporary and highly functional deck layout. A weekender suitable even for short cruises.

Girbau is a young shipyard, but it is coming to the attention of sea-goers because of the originality of its boats. It is based in Cap de Creus, Costa Brava, not far from Barcelona, and its production is strictly handcrafted. It has four models from 27′ to 38′ in length on its list.

In Palma de Mallorca, we tried out its flagship, the Girbau 38, a boat that is very interesting because it manages to combine classic forms, reminiscent of the tradition of goiters and classic Mediterranean boats in general, with a deck layout that smacks very much of the latest generation of walkarounds, marked by outdoor living.

Standing out above it all is the spaciousness of the cockpit, with double removable table and double sofa, facing the large bar/kitchen counter. Overall, a great invitation to conviviality. Two comfortable side walkways lead to the forward sundeck. The central T-Top protects the helm station and the entire central area of the boat from the sun (and if desired, a removable awning with 4 carbon poles can be mounted aft). The bridge, which can be sunk, is boundless and reaching it is very easy thanks to the central passage in the transom.

Cabins of this walkaround goiter

Below deck there are two cabins, the master in the bow and a smaller, nonetheless double, one in the stern. Amidships is the dinette and a sizable bathroom. The boat is available either with a galley on deck, as in the test version, or below deck.

In the engine room, motorization is strictly in the axle line, in this case with two Yanmar engines of 370 hp each. Girbau is keen to point out that no outboard or EFB setups are planned.
