The goal? Making “clearing.” Even if the loads involved are high, even if we are talking about boats (ships) that can exceed 80 meters in length, the deck can still remain clear, clean and perfect for cruising needs. And, in Harken‘s vision, all of this, even in the areas of the deck traditionally dedicated to maneuvering for mooring, occupied by passing bollards and powerful mooring winches.

It was for this purpose that the CLR, the retractable mooring winch (hence its name: Compact, Lightweight and Retractable) was born a few years ago, and with the same objective, the Mooring Reel Winch (MRW) a “captive” mooring winch for mega motor yachts, and the retractable bollards and fairleads to go with CLR winches were presented at the last METS in Amsterdam.

From Emanuele Cecchini, Harken Commercial Director EMEA at APAC, we were told all about it starting with MRW, a captive winch developed for mooring operations and designed to handle loads up to 50 tons.

How Harken MRW Works

The system incorporates a patented feeder with a roller that ensures smooth winding of the line and a double sliding screw that maintains constant alignment during all phases of maneuvering. Modular geometry also allows for quick line replacement, while maintenance is facilitated by single-sided access. Available in hydraulic or electric configuration, the MRW is designed to optimize time and precision in mooring.

The CLR system is all retractable, mooring winch, bollard, and grommet.

Alongside the captive winch debuts the new line of CLR (Compact Light Retractable) retractable equipment, including bollard, fairlead and mooring winch. The CLR Bollard, made of AISI 316 stainless steel, remains hidden flush with the deck when not in use and can be lifted manually by a handle. It is available in three versions with capacities of 10, 20 and 30 tons, all of which can be customized with teak inserts to blend in with the yacht’s deck.

Operating along with the bollard is the CLR Fairlead, a fair lead that is also retractable, designed to keep the deck clear and clean and to promote proper rope sliding during mooring.
