Antifouling

Three solutions: what they are, how they work

Here is a summary of the results of the survey that divided the antifoulings analyzed by the research into three macrofamilies: copper-based, silicone, and silicone film. At the bottom of each chapter you will find ratings expressed in grades from 1 to 10. Four parameters were examined: the efficacy of the product, its toxicity i.e., release of harmful substances into the water, durability i.e., how long it maintains antifouling efficacy over time, and the average price of the product.

1 solution – ANTIVEGATIVE WITH COPPER.

How it works: Among the most popular, and in addition to copper, fungicides, algaecides and other chemical components are added.
The test: Research has shown that current traditional products have become significantly more environmentally friendly (just look at the toxicity test scores that are similar to the theoretically more environmentally friendly silicone-based products) and have maintained their barrier effectiveness to microorganisms. The price range of available products is varied and they are still the least expensive choice.
Test results: Efficacy: 7.5 – Toxicity: 7 – Durability: 7 – Average price: 7

2 solution – SILICONE ANTI-VEGATIVE.

How it works: These are biocide-free products made with silicone or Teflon matrices that produce an anti-adhesive effect. The test: Few products available, more difficult to apply than traditional products but perform well.
In tests conducted, toxicity to fish larvae is equal to that of copper-based antifoulings.
Test results: Efficacy: 8 – Toxicity: 7 – Durability: 7.7 – Average price: 6.5

3 solution – SILICONIC FILM

How it works: It is an adhesive film that is diRectly applied to the hull. Has a lifetime warranty of at least 5 years. The costs are high, about 700 euros per meter.
The test: the results are virtually identical to those of silicone paints. The clear difference is that it is a film and not a paint.
Test results: Efficacy: 7.5 – Toxicity: 7 – Durability: 9 – Average price: 6
