Along comes Waverider 9.2, built by Cardipitaly Nautical Division, a new license-free vessel that will be featured at the Rome Boat Show. Its special feature? It is practically a jet ski, at least to the eye, but it does not need a license.

The jet ski without a license

Stop, stop. We are not completely stunned: we are well aware that “the recreational boating license that is mandatory for the conduct of watercraft, regardless of engine power.” For any doubts, here is a link to what the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport.

So usually to ride a jet ski you need to have a license. This project, however, does not. The brainchild of Claudio Costabile, it is a fiberglass hull approved in CE category C. Moreover, if you thought that (non-inflatable) tubulars had already arrived everywhere, you have to think again! Now they “land” on the jet ski as well.

“Not everyone has the time,” says Costabile. and economic possibilities to obtain a boat license. Based on this consideration, as a motor expert and lover of water sports, an ever-deepening desire grew in me to create a ‘watercraft’ that could obviate the need for a license. The solution was to place the outboard motor, a characteristic feature of boats with a maximum of 40 hp.”

The three distinctive points of Waverider 9.2

Although it has jet ski features, it is possible to drive it without a boat license since the engine is external, located in the rear part of the hull. Another very important aspect is that it is an unsinkable craft because it is built with application of floating ‘tubulars’ all around the bike with from 300 liters of closed-cell foam in the bulwarks and 100 liters in a watertight chamber in the hull. The third and final element is that the gull-wing shaped hull. This, the manufacturer promises, even at top speed and in turns, does not generate spray coming at those on board.

There are two Waveriders that came out of the Cardipitaly Marine Division’s shed featured at the Boat Show. Both are equipped with a 20-hp outboard motor, but the powertrain goes up to 40 horsepower.

We haven’t had a chance to try it out or see it live yet, but it is definitely something new that we are curious about. For questions and prices, you can contact the company at this link.
