Canados, an acronym for Cantieri Navali di Ostia, has been building solid, finished boats for decades. Today that “savoir faire” crosses the ocean thanks to Revolution Marine Group, which has just delivered the first example of the Heritage 36 to the US. A model that carries in its name and design the legacy of the past, but in substance is as contemporary as one can imagine.

Heritage 36: the new catamaran with a retro flavor

Pastel colors, triumph of white with turquoise brushstrokes, simple, clean lines joined by curves that soften volumes-the result is a splendid amarcord effect. The design seems very much a citation to the automotive aesthetic of the 1970s, suspended between the voluptuousness of previous decades but without surrendering to the sharp edges that arrived in the 1980s.

Heritage 36 is 10.92 m long overall and 3.85 m wide. The deck layout betrays a distinctly American inspiration: the axis of symmetry is the central aisle leading to a bowrider bow, while the stern is divided into two sundecks almost flush with the broadside. Amidships, the helm station and dining area are protected by an understated full-beam windshield and a very simple Hard Top, which disappears in the Open version. There is also space for a small cabin, in the starboard hull, and a bathroom, in the port hull, both accessible through hatches that open gull-wing style.

Between past, present and future

A design in constant balance between aesthetics and pragmatism, also underscored by the motorization: twin 300-hp outboards, a must-have choice for the overseas market. Still, they are barely noticeable, since they are visually integrated into the broadside line, which continues aft to keep the side profile clean. Performance, on the other hand, is anything but subtle: 52 knots top speed, 30 cruising. This is thanks to the adoption of a multi-hull hull, which combines stability when stationary with low resistance when sailing, while also allowing low fuel consumption, which the yard claims is 30 percent lower than boats of comparable class.

Classic Boat Time

That vintage is making an overpowering comeback is no longer just a trend, but a fact: from cars, which take up the look of iconic models of the past, this fashion has soon trickled down to boats. We have seen models such as the Sanlorenzo SHE introduced, which have immediately gained great appreciation, and more and more boat owners prefer cult models of the past in place of the latest releases on the market. To give voice to these stories, Barche a Motore inaugurated just this year the Classic Boat section.
