A 40-meter catamaran, theHoa Sen, intended for the most atmospheric cruises in Vietnamese waters, but born in Genoa. Designed by a team of designers and engineers from theUniversity of Genoa, the Hoa Sen will not only be 40 meters long, but will come to life as a real “hotel,” with six double guest cabins, lounges, diving areas, tea rooms, yoga and meeting rooms. In fact, in addition to engaging on the fronts of sustainability, at the heart of the project lies deepening and cultural exchange, immersing its guests in the full Vietnamese tradition.

Indeed, the project, winner of the MUVE Yacht Projects 2024, involves the development of a catamaran intended for 10-day cruises with ranges up to 450 miles, while remaining rooted in the cornerstones of culture, sustainability and modularity. In fact, from the perspective of both materials, layouts, and propulsion, the Hoa Sen looks at solutions that are efficient in terms of ecological impacts while providing a luxurious environment designed to host various cultural activities related to local tradition. Here is a preview of the concept and articulation of the project.

Hoa Sen – Concept

To best understand the innovations behind the Hoa Sen, it is necessary to start with the concept. In fact, in terms of sustainability, the project is developed on two pivotal principles: material and constructive sustainability and that of use and utilization. On the first front, in addition to the use of reusable or recyclable end-of-life materials (some of which are produced or obtained locally), the 40-meter concept is developed on a modular foundation, leading to the design of a hull whose components are not only easier and more sustainable to build, but can change and undergo interventions over time, thus without the need for new construction. Bridge and superstructures, therefore, result as a separate module from the hull and interior, which are themselves independent and capable of direct intervention.

On the sustainability of use front, however, the project not only relies on hybrid propulsion systems, but also boasts several energy-saving systems, use of LCA materials, and, most importantly, relies in part on renewable resources, such as solar energy (via a huge paneled surface), heat recovery produced by the engines as an energy source, and, finally, rainwater harvesting to reduce the use of fresh water and desalination plants where superfluous.

Board Spaces

Turning instead to the concept related layout and volumes, the boat will boast huge outdoor and indoor convivial areas for both relaxation and cultural activities. In addition to the outdoor lounge areas, diving area, and on-board spa, there will in fact be a Yoga room, Tea room, meeting area, and 6 double guest cabins.

Hoa Sen – Interior

Instead, one of the two hulls will be entirely dedicated to the crew, while, the exteriors, will offer everything needed to enjoy the cruise.

Hoa Sen – Salon

The design team consists of: Edoardo Pisu, Pietro Maccarini and Daniele Onorini, in the role of Designers; Alessia Canepa, Elisabetta Giunti and Elisa Casazza, on the other hand, in the role of Engineers.
