Last May 3, a luxury Tecnomar Lamborghini 63 worth $4.7 million sank off Miami Beach, Florida. The boat was packed with people, mostly influencers, who despite the drama snickered and kept taking selfies.

It is indeed true that sometimes the value of a yacht is inversely proportional to the simple common sense of its captain and crew. As evidenced by the spectacular shipwreck recently of a 63-foot Tecnomar Lamborghini luxury yacht off Miami Beach, Florida, USA. Yet this is a state-of-the-art boat with top-of-the-line sailing qualities. We tried it, read our test here.

On the afternoon of Saturday, May 3, the boat, overloaded with people, began taking on water while near Monument Island in Biscayne Bay. That weekend in South Florida was particularly busy because there was an air and sea show scheduled that drew large crowds to Fort Lauderdale beach. In addition, the Miami Grand Prix was being held in nearby Miami Gardens. As many as 32 people, mostly influencers, had boarded the Lamborghini yacht, ready to capture the spectacle for their social profiles. Too bad the boat’s carrying capacity is 12 people.

Influencers laughing as the yacht sinks

And indeed the hull around 5 p.m. under the load of people, almost all of whom had climbed onto the top reef to secure the best overview, began to tilt dangerously by lurching to one side. Then it began taking on water from the stern. Videos circulated on the net show the frantic moments of the disaster with the yacht semi-sunken and people wearing life jackets trying to laboriously balance themselves on the bow.

Paradoxically, however, some of them do not realize the danger and start snickering and making jokes. Someone can be heard shouting “Iceberg, iceberg!” mocking the sinking of the “Titanic, while a woman lifts a $330 bottle of Clase Azul Gold tequila. Still others try to keep luxury designer handbags and MacBookAirs out of the water. In short, a dramatic and in some ways surreal situation.

All safe and the yacht will be recovered

Once the Tecnomar for Lamborghini 63 mayday was intercepted, crews from the Coast Guard, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and Miami Beach Police Marine Patrol units responded to calls for help by immediately arriving on scene. All 32 people were taken to the Miami Beach Marina and checked by the Miami Beach Fire Department. None of them were fortunately injured. “The yacht later was pushed out of the channel and posed no threat to boaters,” the Coast Guard said.

It appears that the vessel has not touched bottom for the time being. In fact, Coast Guard rescuers used special “airbags” to lift it up and keep it afloat out of maritime traffic until the owner decides its fate with the help of a salvage company. The Tecnomar Lamborghini 63 involved in the accident was launched in 2023, has a length of 19.20 meters and is a limited edition model (only 11 examples) resulting from the collaboration between The Italian Sea Group and the high-end Italian automotive brand

Tecnomar Lamborghini accident. Luxury does not dispense with safety rules

Beyond the successful outcome of the rescue operations, the bewilderment of what happened remains. A risky and paradoxical situation that starts in the first place from the captain’s decision to embark all those people with a weight far beyond what the technical parameters of the yacht allow.

Adherence to carrying capacity is just one of the requirements of safe boating in addition to moderate speed in case of maritime traffic, adherence to precedence at sea, activation of automatic engine propeller shut-off systems in case of emergency, and so on. Commanding a super luxury yacht makes no exception to these sacrosanct rules of safety on board….
