After the incredible photos of the U.S. Coast Guard’s extreme drills, here are some shots of the men of the Italian Coast Guard practicing rescuing a man at sea in 4-meter waves and winds up to 30 knots. The goal of the drills is the same at both corps: to increase the confidence with the boat, the skills and the preparedness of those who must carry rescue at sea in all circumstances to save lives.
The boat used: the patrol boat CP884
Coordinated in this exercise by the Giulianova Maritime District Office, SAR (Search and Rescue) patrol boat CP884 of the 800 Class simulated the recovery of a man at sea. These boats are built by Codecasadue shipyards in Viareggio and Vittoria shipyards in Adria, and are unsinkable, self-righting units. These boats are distributed throughout Italy because they are very suitable for SAR operations even in particularly adverse weather and sea conditions.
Depending on the version, they range in length from 10.6 to 12.95 meters with propeller or waterjet propulsion. They are all made entirely of aluminum and can reach speeds of over 30 knots with a range of about 180 miles. They have a crew of 3 people. The class also includes 6 units identified as the “Jubilee” class, in honor of the Holy Year of 2000, which are specially outfitted to provide immediate rescue to any aircraft that have been crashed at sea (Air Rescue).
