Press on the accelerator to get to the top of the international shipbuilding industry. This is the challenge of Sunseeker, one of the leading interpreters of the “British” style declined in a nautical key. At the helm of this project is CEO Andrea Frabetti, a longtime manager in the Italian boating industry. As he himself stated in an interview with Boats to Motor No. 11 (pp. 61-67), the goal is to get to compete with major international players for a place among the top three in the market.
Sunseeker 65 Sport Yacht
The investment plan put in place to achieve this goal is colossal and bears precisely the signature of Frabetti, the chosen man of Chinese tycoon Wang Jianlin, owner of the shipyard, for this operation. With a budget of 60 million pounds, about 70 million euros, at least ten new products will be developed and launched between 2020 and 2021. Among the top models is the 65 Sport Yacht, a true watershed between the old and new generation of 60-footers branded Sunseeker.
This model plays a crucial role because it fits exactly in the middle of the 20-meter market, where there is a lot of competition. To consolidate itself in this range, the British shipyard did not neglect any element of the new 65-footer. The result is a boat that synthesizes the entire design philosophy of the new generation of Sunseeker. Let’s go aboard to see how this 20-meter yacht is designed.
Sunseeker 65 Sport Yacht – SkyHelm
A British super car and a Sunseeker share at least three key elements: speed, elegance and technology. And it is not only because of the James Bond films that the Poole yard has entered the collective imagination, but because of its ability to put ingredients together and why not, even play with the contaminations between two worlds as closely linked as the sea and the four-wheelers are. Talking about a new model often starts with the stern, the place from which the boat is usually accessed. This time it is worth starting with the SkyHelm, that is, the revolutionary new flybridge according to Sunseeker.
Being at the helm from this location is like sitting in a spider with the two seats on two sides of the dashboard are set very low, as if to emphasize the contact between those on board and the sea. The instrumentation consists of a futuristic glass top complete with retro chrome dials housing LED displays. The rudder is made of carbon fiber and can be raised to make it easier for those in charge to sit down or even to steer while standing.
Since navigation, though central, is not everything, the two bridge seats are able to rotate aft and turn into seats for conversation with those seated on the flybridge. To conclude the chapter on the dashboard, there is one last but salient piece of information to be had: the windshield can also tilt up and down according to the driver’s preference. Therefore, the Sunseeker 65 Sport Yacht presents itself as the right boat to experience the relationship with the sea, between adrenaline and comfort, according to one’s needs.
Sunseeker 65 Sport Yacht – Blanket
Descending to the main deck at the far stern we find the large platform, ideal for those who like to stand with their feet in the water or sit as if on the shoreline. At the same time, this area houses a tender garage with a fully flush floor that allows a Williams 345 Jet tender to be transported and launched. The innovative diagonally sliding hydraulic bathing platform plays a key role in this stage. The additional garage space can hold SeaBobs, inflatable SUPs, diving equipment, in short, all the water toys you could want. At the same time, the platform can directly accommodate the tender. At that point the garage becomes a beach club with built-in bar and seating.
In any case, the open garage door has two built-in rain showers and overhead speakers. Both at the stern and bow, the boat is equipped with sundecks. Climbing aboard from the cockpit, the entry window flows away effortlessly, allowing this area to merge with the interior dominated by the superstructure window.
Sunseeker 65 Sport Yacht – Below decks and motorization
The Sunseeker 65 Sport Yacht in the standard version has three cabins and can therefore accommodate up to six guests. The master stateroom is full beam and includes a very large bathroom, as does the forward VIP cabin. Upon request, the shipyard can be asked to provide a study for the owner attached to the master cabin, a single berth cabin or a small kitchen.
A new design sees the fully furnished crew cabin located forward of the garage and accessed via a dedicated staircase in the cockpit. This is possible because of the motorization, the IPS. With two Volvo Penta IPS-1200 or IPS-1350 engines, the boat can touch up to 38 top speed.
