McLaren Engineering, a division of Linamar, announces a partnership with Honda Marine to build its own line of outboard engines.
If Honda, the world’s largest engine manufacturer, needs no introduction, McLaren Engineering is a company engaged in the design and construction of powertrain and transmission systems for the automotive market. Its racing team has achieved success in Indy Car and LeMans. To emphasize this racing legacy, it has named this line McLaren Performance, which directly refers to the concept of performance.
This new McLaren Performance M300 engine is based on the proven 3.6-liter Honda BF250 V6 engine, which carries all of the Japanese manufacturer’s key features, including integration with other Honda Marine products and a five-year warranty.
Applying its expertise in precision engineering, McLaren Engineering will do a real tune-up of the base model to increase maximum power to 300 hp and mid-range torque. The changes consist of a new camshaft to improve valve timing and stroke, new fuel injectors to give more fuel, and a new control unit to increase efficiency.
The result should best represent the fusion of the strengths of these two companies: a performance-focused outboard engine with an improved power-to-weight ratio and great fuel efficiency. We are talking about 0.8 miles per liter at cruising speed: not bad for a 300 hp, but of course it will depend on the type of hull and speed considered, which have not been disclosed.
The new agreement allows McLaren Engineering to sell McLaren Performance M300 models (licensed from Honda) to affiliated OEMs, while Honda will enhance its offerings in the high-power segment.
