Bad weather from the southwest did not only affect Italy’s northwest coast; Balearia and the French Riviera were also harshly swept by the Libeccio. Damage is reported in various ports along the coast, with one of the worst occurring on the island of Majorca, specifically in Port d’Andratx.
The megayacht, a 34-meter Custom Line from the Ferretti Group, appears to have broken its moorings due to the strong undertow, running into pieces against the quay and sinking rapidly. Rescue efforts were made difficult by adverse sea conditions. The boat, launched in 2003, would appear to be worth close to 3.5 million euros.
