On the surface it may look like a classic thermal outboard motor, similar to the many that Mercury Marine sells around the world. In reality, however, the Avator 7.5e is the first electric-powered outboard engine to be introduced by the U.S. brand. The first step by Mercury, which has already announced the release of two additional electric motors, toward going green.

Avator 7.5e conceals beneath its futuristic grille a concentration of zero-emission power and innovation. The logo is still Mercury’s, but inside the engine instead of cylinders, valves and pistons we find the 1kWh lithium-ion battery. The system is totally plug&play, no wires need to be connected to run the motor but just insert the battery into the housing and turn on the motor. Mercury’s outboard weighs about 26.6 kg with the battery inserted and mounts easily on any transom.

runs cross-flow generating high torque with low effort, maximizing range and delivering efficient performance. The three-blade propeller that can be combined with the motor is available in three different pitches. The motor is maneuvered by the convenient built-in bar that becomes a carrying handle when the motor is not in use. With the color display, it is possible to have an eye on the following at all times an estimate of the remaining range and an indication of battery life, which updates instantly based on usage. By purchasing the SmartCraft module, it is also possible to view all battery-related info from the Mercury Marine smartphone app.

The supplied battery with 48 V has a weight of 7.1 kg and is water and dust resistant (IP67). It can make the motor develop an input power of 1000W and a rated power of 750W. Mercury has designed the batteries in the Avator 7.5e to be lightweight and convenient to carry around: they have a built-in handle and can be changed quickly for those who need extended use. Charging is done through the 110 W smart charger that keeps the voltage under control at all times to avoid short circuits. Fast charging is also available although the manufacturer does not state charging times. The manufacturer said that the two new Avator 20e and Avator 35e electric outboard motors will also be introduced during the year 2023.
