The mega RIB phenomenon is enjoying renewed success. There are many boatyards (especially here in Italy) specialising in the production of inflatable and maxi inflatable boats. But who likes them and why? A typical case is the owner of a large yacht. On a 60- to 80-foot boat there is almost always a need for a crew and the opportunities to “steer” your boat, if the owner is impractical, are reduced.

With an inflatable boat (even a 15-metre one), on the other hand, the owner has fun and feels safe to steer without a crew. Sometimes the large dinghy is supported by a “mother boat” which follows even without being stowed on board. The result is that it can also go to areas far from its home port or mothership, given the performance of this type of dinghy.

Coastal Maxi 46 Rada

It is the latest example of how the Campania-based yard interprets the large inflatable boat. Like the other models in the Coastal range, this 14-metre out-and-out was the brainchild of Raffaele Lettieri, the man who in 2008 launched the business of building large tenders and stand-alone rib boats, and Francesco Guida, the engineer often associated with the design of fascinating megayachts. The upward shift in construction size has not altered the summery, Mediterranean nature of the Coastal Maxi 46 Rada. The entire deck is given over to sunbathing areas, especially the large aft sun pad, which can also be converted into a sofa for the main dining table as required. The hull is designed to offer top speeds of around 55 knots. Coastal’s flagship installs outboard engines. The maximum power allowed is 1050 HP.

Nuova Jolly Prince 50

The Nuova Jolly Prince 50is the largest inflatable boat ever built by Nuova Jolly. The Nuova Jolly Prince 50 is the shipyard’s answer to the trend of maxi RIBs. With its 15 metres in length and 4.54 in width, it is the flagship of the fleet. This first model is powered by a Yamaha V8 425 XTO Offshore quad outboard, for a total of 1700 HP, combined with the Helm Master joystick that helps with manoeuvring. You can also opt for 350 or 400 hp Mercury Verado or inboard petrol or diesel engines combined with surface drives. This maxi dinghy relies heavily on a stylish deck, with a bowrider-style bow with dinette and electrically-actuated table that is height-adjustable and totally concealed in the floor.

Ranieri Cayman 28 Executive

The Soverato yard has now launched itself into the rib world, as demonstrated by the novelty just presented: the new Ranieri Cayman 28.0 Executive. The layout of this new Ranieri inflatable boat is a modern sundeck, with a large beam that, however, when the tubes are deflated, allows the boat to be loaded.  The external layout features a “C”-shaped rear dinette with wraparound side shoulders. In this area of the dinghy it is possible to fit a table for 6 people, a stand-up fitted with provisions for inserting a sink, fridge and cooker, and a large, protective central console where, in addition to the comfortable and complete driving position, there is a sliding door for entering the cabin. Below deck, the cabin has reached a maximum height of over one metre sixty-five, where there is a comfortable double bed and separate bathroom.
