Following the unveiling of the new NX290 from Brazilian boatyard NX Boats at Nautilia, we had a chance to test this powerboat and tell you how it went.

NX 290

This is a sporty and dynamic open, with lots of exterior space that is noticeable right from the stern where there is a large platform. The inboard motorization, we’ll come back to that later above, enhances these spaces even more. Aft we find a convivial area with sofas and an outdoor galley equipped with a grill and sink, ideal for al fresco dining, and all just steps from the water. The cockpit is on one level and protected by a hard-top that protects, but also allows you to enjoy the sea breeze. An interesting aspect is the absence of side walkways; access to the forward sundeck is through an opening in the port side of the windshield as is typical of NX hulls.

The interiors are designed to accommodate two people to sleep, with the bed obtainable in the forward dinette by lowering the table plus a separate bathroom.

The open vessel in navigation

Sea testing revealed that the NX 290 performs well even in less than optimal conditions. During the test, we faced troublesome waves and the boat handled it well. The chosen motorization, with a 320-horsepower V8 outboard engine from Volvo, proved to be sufficient to exceed 30 knots. The top speed, in fact, was 34 with a cruising speed around 25 knots for consumption around 50 liters per hour. Maneuverability proved to be good both in the open sea and when maneuvering in port, making the boat safe and easy to handle. At mooring, given the structure where we do not find a continuous walkway along the entire hull, it may be useful to insert a support for the transom when mooring.

What does it look like

In conclusion, the NX 340 presents itself as a viable option for those looking for a compact and functional open. With its distinctive design and well-utilized spaces, it offers a good compromise between comfort and performance. Although not a party boat in the traditional sense, its versatility makes it suitable for both leisurely cruising and more dynamic outings.
