The Mergellina Marina is preparing to become a true Marina. In the chronic shortage of berths in our country, this is the goal of Afina Napoli Srl, which aims to expand the port while respecting eco-sustainability and landscape limits and constraints. As early as this fall, the implementation project is expected to arrive. Here’s what changes.
The project design, now in the home stretch, calls for the extension of the Mergellina breakwater pier for about 250 meters, accommodating 6 floating docks perpendicular to the pier. This will allow about 350/400 new berths to be moored. The concreteness of the operation comes from the key players who are carrying it out. In addition to Afina, the following also appears. Marinedi Group of Renato Marconi, which operates a major network of premium marinas in Italy.
“No particular upheaval,” comments Marconi – Of what today represents the Mergellina area. Work will be done only on the breakwater pier with the optimization and rationalization of what already exists to date, with only the expansion of medium and small berths. All with the construction of an extension of the overflow arm to also defend the fragility that the current marina demonstrates today.”.
This operation will not only bring more berths and moorings to an area that particularly needs them and where they are lacking, but it will also be an important driver for the economy. The presence of more berths will solve the mooring problem of those who want one. What does this mean? More work for the sites around, more activities in the area, and also the possibility of work for at least 80 to 100 workers, and their respective families, who will be involved in management activities.

“For years we have been trying to solve the age-old problem of berths and, above all, to improve the image and operations of Mergellina so that it can become a true Marina,” comments Gennaro Amato president of AFINA -. Our timeline, after the corporate incorporation and registration of Afina Napoli Ltd. which will take place by the end of the month, is to submit to public bodies such as the City Council, the Region, the Naples Port Authority and the Superintendency, the project will be ready by early November. If everything goes smoothly, and I trust in the positive indications received from the institutional referents at the States General of Nautics organized by us at Nauticsud, by spring 2027 we will finally have the Marina di Mergellina“.
