The new generation of Nordic-style powerboats is expanding with the launch of the Quarken 27. The new Finnish boatyard Quarken is launching a new 8-metre in a highly competitive market segment. We’re thinking of the Axopar 28 or Dromeas 28, not forgetting the more recent Windy SR28 CC or Ryck 280. The yard has an exclusive agreement with Yamaha Marine, which will supply its outboards to the company for five years. The Quarken range starts with the new 27-footer and will expand with a 33-footer first and a 40-footer later.

The shipyard’s aim is to create fully modular boats with plenty of scope for customization. Owners can choose from a variety of configurations such as an open day boat or a cruiser for longer distances. Then there is the choice of seating, dining configurations and equipment for water sports and fishing.

All crazy for Scandinavian Design? Perhaps, but what is certain is that this type of boat is popular and there are now several interpreters of this style on the market.

Quarken Boats presents the new Quarken 27, the 8-metre Finnish boat. This first Quarken is available, as is now standard in the segment, in 3 versions: Pure Open, T-Top with a solid fibreglass roof and Cabin for all seasons (to be launched later). The price of the Open version has also been released. It starts at 82,800 euro, which also includes a Yamaha F300 outboard without propeller. VAT, transport, etc. are not included.

Speaking of the yard, the name Quarken is the English version of Kvarken, the northernmost arm of the Baltic Sea, also known as the Gulf of Bothnia. Quarken’s hometown is Kokkola, Finland, an area known for its long tradition of boat building.

Scandinavian not only in appearance, but also in substance. The new Quarken 27 focuses on on-board modularity starting at the stern. The standard layout includes an open transom, customisable deck space and a gangway on the port side that connects bow and stern.

Each boat can be equipped to meet a wide variety of needs and requirements. As we mentioned earlier, the owner can decide on the layout to suit his or her needs (days at sea or longer cruises), choosing between seating, dining tables or a fishing setup. The helm console, says the yard, is designed to incorporate Yamaha’s Steer by Wire throttles and multifunction displays. In short, creating a boat that is easy to steer and ergonomic.

Below deck there is a forward cabin, accessible from the helm console, with a bed that sleeps two. The optional Weekend package includes an electric toilet, fresh water, shore power and an aft shower. This choice lends itself to those who want to have a more versatile boat suitable for even longer cruises. The arrival of the Cabin version, details of which have not yet been revealed, will certainly mark a further step in this direction.

Quarken 27 – Propulsion and performance

All boats in the range have a double-stepped hull. The weight distribution is designed to best match the Yamaha outboards. The yard promises an agile and responsive hull with good handling in turns. Combined with Yamaha’s new 300hp V6 outboard engine, the Quarken 27 has a top speed of 43-45 knots. While waiting for the opportunity to test it, Quarken has already indicated a fuel consumption at cruising speed of less than 1.5 ltr / nautical mile.
