Top boats at birth and today used of excellence. In the Motor Boats archives, we have unearthed some unmissable tests for those who are fond of the boats of yesteryear, but also for those who are looking for a test of these models, tests that are unavailable today. After the
Continental 50S
is the turn of the

, an elegant and sporty design as well as capable of over 45 knots.
Rizzardi 55 Incredible
The second model in the Rizzardi shipyard’s InCRedible range, the Rizzardi 55 InCRedible (2008) joins the “historic” open models of the CR line, whose sporty spirit it evokes, while reserving special consideration for a new and improved interior livability and the cockpit, which is now more neat and spacious. The InCRedible 55, in fact, has a more pronounced width (4.84 m), aimed, precisely, at greater usability of on-board spaces and presents new solutions for the line, starting with the tender-garage under the aft sundeck. Performance-wise, the sporty nature of this boat can be expressed with two engine power options (900 or 1100 hp) to reach speeds in excess of 45 knots.
Rizzardi 55 Incredible – Project
The study of InCRedible 55 is the work of the site’s technicians under the guidance of its creator, Damiano Rizzardi. The line is reminiscent of that of the precursor model, the 45, with the characteristic CR logo carved partly from the fiberglass of the superstructure and partly from the side glass patterns. If you look closely, in fact, the circular gray part picks up the C, while the lower glass and the colored part of the molding on the air intake form the R. The cut of the stern slopes gently down to the swim platform, from which the tender garage is accessed. On this 18-footer, designers wanted to take advantage of the entire forward deckhouse to accommodate a large sundeck, XL compared to any competitor of the time. The interior layout includes three double cabins, each with related facilities and, finally, an optional sailor cabin.
Rizzardi 55 Incredible – Exterior
The Rizzardi 55 InCRedible enters that bracket of boats with a hard top and sunroof, which allows the vessel to be used for a longer period during the year. Such a sheltered cockpit, in fact, allows outings in weather conditions that are not always favorable and even during off-season periods. The sheltered living area is quite significant in its size, with a large sofa, fronted by a smaller one, and served by a cabinet used for a barbecue, sink, and refrigerator.
The dashboard, which is very balanced in its proportions and instrument layout, is flanked by an elongated sundeck seat set close to the windshield. The easiest access to the aft swim platform is via the ladder to the left of the sundeck, but there is also the option of passing onto the opposite broadside via another mirrored ladder. Once you reach the forward deckhouse, you can enjoy a “king-size” sundeck like few seen. Standard equipment includes an electrohydraulically opening tender garage with a fair amount of capacity. Unexpected, however, is the solution of the manual swim ladder, which must be mounted on the swim platform each time and then stored in a locker, an effort, however, that one can safely indulge in.
Rizzardi 55 Incredible – Interior
The planned production (five boats per year) made this 18-meter particularly customizable by the owner, with Rizzardi able to grant a wide choice of materials and furniture combinations to its clients. In the case of the first model, the one tested, the pleasing contrast between the light color of the upholstery and the warm color of the wood gives a clear view of the living forms and contents.
The dinette area with the open galley with peninsula dominates the central part, while the guest cabins with their bathrooms are toward the stern, with the master cabin, however, in the bow. The distribution of the latter turns out to be rather peculiar, with the bed positioned with the head towards the stern and the bathroom all forward, a solution that allows for ample space and a cabin floor always on the same level.
Rizzardi 55 Incredible – Construction
The boat is entirely designed and built according to the Regulations of the Italian Naval Registry. As for the lamination of the hull, the first three layers are made using glass fibers (type E) impregnated with vinylester resin, which, due to its special chemical and physical properties, provides excellent prevention from osmosis. The lamination of the remaining parts, however, is made using isophthalic polyester resin. The boat structure of the hull is of a mixed type, with longitudinal and transverse structures in the hull and sandwich structures on the bulwarks. The deck and superstructure are made entirely of Pvc sandwich.
Rizzardi 55 Incredible – Plant Engineering and Motorization
The facilities are found to be made in relation to the highest standards, with a well-cleaned engine room, cleared of superfluous and with the various organs easily accessible. Noteworthy are the metal pipes with brass and bronze coupling flanges. Discreet standard equipment as far as major accessories are concerned. In terms of powertrains, however, there are two engines planned, both MAN: a 900-horsepower V8 and an 1100-horsepower V10. At the time, we tried the 55 InCRedible with the more powerful motorization, for results more than adequate for the type of boat.
Performance
The conditions of the Motor Boats test were perhaps not the best for assaying the speed capabilities of the hull, but granted in compensation a good impression relative to seaworthiness. In fact, the hull responds well to the controls, ready and responsive in even tight turns at high speed. The edge, typical Rizzardi, gives good lift to the hull, but somewhat accentuates the impact on the wave; on the other hand, it effectively deflects spray. Also good is the minimum planing speed for a boat equipped with surface propellers: 11 knots at 1200 rpm. Maneuverability at the berth is perfectly within the norm.
