Sanlorenzo has launched its first boat equipped with a 100% green power system for onboard consumption. Named 50Steel (49.99 x 9.40 m) and to be delivered in July 2024, it is an important step for the
Road to 2030
of the shipyard, which has set out to study and adopt solutions to reduce its environmental impact.
How the system on board the 50 Steel works
The system found aboard the Sanlorenzo 50Steel is a Fuel Cell Reformer (methanol reformer) and allows green methanol to be converted into hydrogen to generate electricity. The modular system consists of fuel cells (Fuel Cells) and a reformer that converts green methanol into hydrogen, thus avoiding storage of the hydrogen that is immediately used to fuel the cells.
Energy is produced by 20 modules of 5 kW each, for a total of 100 kW in total, making the vessel independent of fossil fuel generators. Only in case of peak demand will lithium batteries, which have a capacity of about 600 kW/h, also be used in parallel. Manufacturing the system is Advent Technologies, a Siemens Energy partner that signed an exclusive agreement with Sanlorenzo in 2021.
Today zero emissions in roadstead, tomorrow in navigation?
The ambitious goal of Sanlorenzo’s Road to 20 30 plan is to achieve delivery of a vessel with totally carbon neutral propulsion by 2030. In the company’s plans, however, there is the idea of proceeding in steps and starting with what is the most polluting moment of boat life: anchorage. A survey of the data available for its boats showed that for 90 percent of the time spent on board, the boat is stationary, and only 10 percent of the time is sailing. This has encouraged the shipyard to focus on reducing emissions when the boat is at anchor, estimating -20 to -30 percent emissions annually with the introduction of the new green methanol system.
What boat is the Sanlorenzo 50Steel
In addition to innovations involving sustainability, the Sanlorenzo 50Steel also offers novelties and innovations in design. The boat is spread over five different staggered decks, with the main deck leading the way and welcoming guests aboard in its large salon. Internal stairs lead to other areas of the vessel, such as the lower deck area dedicated to the gym and SPA and the second salon on the upper deck. Very spacious is the dining room, with significant heights ranging from 2.1 to 3.35 meters. There are four guest cabins in addition to the large master cabin.
On board the Sanlorenzo 50Steel, the space dedicated to the engine room has been completely rethought, with a concept called HER (Hidden Engine Room) that has made it possible to recover a lot of space to devote to other uses.
The outdoor spaces of the Sanlorenzo 50Steel are in communication with each other thanks to stairs with maximum height differences of one and a half meters. Aft we find theBeach Club area with a swimming pool and three open terraces-a 150-square-meter beach when at anchor. On the sun deck, however, we find a second pool, and on all decks there is no shortage of relaxation areas and sundecks.
The interiors are designed by Piero Lissoni while the design is by Zuccon International Project studio.
