Satellite telephony winks at the world of smartphones with the birth of Intermatica‘s Thuraya X5-Touch . Satellite phones have always been thought of as tools that are as useful and reliable as they are functionally obsolete, especially when compared to the giant strides that telephony has made. But why not merge the many functions of smartphones into one device while adding the security of satellite service? Intermatica and Thuraya simultaneously announced the launch of Thuraya X5-Touch , which is the first satellite smartphone.
What does it look like?
First, it is based on the Android operating system with a 5.2-inch HD touchscreen display. And is it robust for those who sail? It is designed to work even in humid conditions and with gloves on, with excellent resistance to water and dust (so even sand). The two available nano-SIM slots, one GSM (2G/3G/4G/LTE) and one Thuraya, allow both satellite and GSM service to be handled at the same time as well (as needed) and can be enabled or disabled via menu settings at any time. Then being a tool designed for even extreme conditions, the interface is very simple and intuitive, and it is available in 16 languages, including Italian.
Who is it for?
For anyone traveling between areas with GSM coverage (the classic one we use) to areas that do not: from professionals to recreational boating enthusiasts (and beyond) there is something for everyone. The state of the art in the world of satellites that can make life easier-and not a little easier-for travelers in remote or isolated areas, such as boaters. And being a very special project, it also provides for the possibility that apps tailored to users’ needs will be developed, according to the innovative “BYOA – Bring Your Own Application” concept.
