Sharp edges, sleek lines, supercar look-these are the first things that jump to the eye when looking at the renderings of the new SAY 42 Sport, which will debut in Düsseldorf on January 17. Based on the hull of the previous SAY 42, the new Sport version brings a more versatile deck layout without sacrificing the original spirit.

SAY 42 Sports

The shipyard is SAY Carbon Yachts, and that is all that needs to be said. Carbon, embedded in the very name of the company, is not an aesthetic accessory, as you often see, but a real philosophy. Everything you see on these boats is carbon. The result? Remarkable performance, especially when compared to fuel consumption: like the previous model, this 42 Sport will reach 50 knots. The merit is, precisely, an all-carbon construction, which, in the original 42, managed to keep weights within 4 1/2 tons, motorized and even with gyro stabilizer. Not bad for a boat nearly 13 meters f.t. and 4 meters wide.

Single hull

But materials are not everything. And the beam size proves it to us: 3.99 m wide is not small for a hull that aims to run hard. In fact, the hull is much narrower, thanks to a design that has made the brand’s fortune and become a trademark. The flare of the masons, achieved in two sharp volumes, is indeed extreme. In this photo, you can particularly appreciate this concept.

This results in a boundless bow deck while maintaining a narrow waterline width perfect for speed. Combined with a patented Petestep hull, a special hull that combines a sought-after combination of rails and steps, here is the recipe for a boat that is sporty, fun, fast … and fuel-efficient, too.

Blanket for all

Perhaps the biggest limitation of the original 42 was a similarly extreme layout: completely open, no superstructure. And with such sleek lines, below-deck volumes also suffer. The Sport version comes to offer a more versatile alternative, suitable for all-around use. The layout remains similar aft, with the large island sundeck concealing the engine room (the engine is inboard). But now the cockpit is protected by a large – and increasingly angular – hard top, which goes over the windshield. Finally, even the flush bow deck, typical of cult 1980s powerboats, has been sacrificed to a more convivial and protected configuration.
