Sergio Davì in French Guiana

After 6 days and 8 hours of nonstop sailing, Sergio Davì and Teo Aiello arrived in French Guiana, in the city of Kourou. With about 1,770 total miles, the two navigators aboard the Arethusa Explorer set two new records. In 2017, in fact, the Palermo navigator had made it from Cape Verde to Brazil, covering a total of 1258 nautical miles in 132 hours of sailing.

Sergio Davì crossed the Atlantic.

After crossing the Atlantic, Sergio Davì is now about halfway through the journey that will take him to Los Angeles in the coming weeks. Although Daví’s journey is still a long one, the most “extreme” leg by miles can still be considered at this point archived with a double record in his pocket.

The moment of refueling in Mindelo for Sergio Davì before setting sail

On this last leg, propelled by the trade winds, the Nuova Jolly Prince 38cc Aretusa Explorer sailed first in displacement mode, due to the large amount of fuel taken on board. Then, once the critical threshold was passed, the dinghy was pushed into glide for the final ride. Propelling it, as anticipated in previous articles(read here) a pair of Suzuki DF300Bs with twin counter-rotating propellers. Those that to date rank second among the Japanese manufacturer’s most powerful outboard motors have shown great endurance and power in a very challenging stage.

On board, an important role, especially in a stage like this, was played by electronics. From AIS to auto-pilot, these are all elements that play a key role in enabling safe navigation, particularly at night. At the same time also to allow for moments of rest when needed. Sergio uses Simrad apparatuses.

Also on board with Sergio Davì on this leg was Teo Aiello, co-owner of Nuova Jolly Marine and brother of Antonio (who had sailed with Sergio Davì from Gran Canaria to Mindelo). With the arrival in French Guiana Daví is almost halfway through the total miles calculated to reach Los Angeles. So now begins a “second part” adventure between the Caribbean islands, Colombia, Panama, Guatemala, Mexico, and finally California.
