Inflatable boatman and adventurer Sergio Davì is about to set off on a new solo expedition.
During the 64th Genoa International Boat Show, he unveiled the “Japan Sea Expedition,” a long journey aboard an 11-meter dinghy that will see him cast off his moorings from Italy and sail east to reach Tokyo. There are those who with a dinghy are content to sail along the coast and those who consider it the ideal nautical means for long journeys, crossings and extreme expeditions.
Sergio Davì belongs to this second category and in his field he is a true champion, a unique character on the world scene ready to relaunch bigger and bigger challenges.
The one that will see him as a protagonist in the coming months is called “Japan Sea Expedition” and was presented last September 22 at the 64th International Boat Show in Genoa, during the press conference organized by Suzuki.
After having sailed the length and breadth of the North Seas and the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, Sergio Davì this time puts the bow towards the East and goes to the East.
Soloing 11,000 miles to Tokyo
Between 2025 and 2026, the Palermo-based commander will sail solo from Italy to Suez, then cross the Indian Ocean and part of the South China Sea to reach Tokyo, Japan.
It will be a long journey, extremely challenging and full of unknowns.
Indeed, some 11,000 nautical miles will be covered over a 6-month voyage, with an average of 25 stopovers in 13 countries between Europe, northeast Africa and Asia.
Sergio Davì will sail aboard the 11-meter Nuova Jolly Prince 38 cc dinghy powered by two Suzuki DF300B outboards and equipped with Simrad and Quick on-board electronics, two reliable and and essential travel companions that he also had with him on his last transoceanic adventure of 10,000 nautical miles from Palermo to Los Angeles between 2021 and 2022.
Here’s how to follow Davy’s adventure in real time
In addition to an unprecedented seafaring adventure, the “Japan Sea Expedition” will also be a full-fledged scientific expedition in an inflatable boat that aims to promote research and monitoring activities on the health status of the oceans.
In collaboration with teams from CCM and the University of Palermo (Aten Center), Davì will collect important data on the health condition of the marine and atmospheric world during the voyage.
