The new Bertram 35 is the first iconic U.S. fisherman weekender built entirely in Italy. There is more. It is the heir to the legendary
Bertram 31
, a super-cult model in this particular type of fisherman.
A classic alongside vessels with more modern approaches such as the
39 Center Console
or the 28 XC. The link with Italy, after all, is stronger than ever, given that, for the past 8 years, the brand has been owned by the Gavio family, which also controls another historic shipyard, this time a local one, namely Baglietto. There is more. This 35 is the first example entirely made in Massa Carrara in a plant dedicated entirely to Bertram production within the Baglietto factories.

The standard of quality, however, between Europe and the U.S. is absolutely the same. The pedigree of the smallest model in the offshore range, after all, speaks for itself and actualizes an idea of a boat, the 31, that is the offspring of two boating monsters such as Dick Bertram and designer Raymond “Ray” Hunt.

The water lines as well as the exteriors come from the hand of Michael Peters, among the most highly regarded in the industry, while the hull, 10.6 meters long overall and 9.44 at the waterline, is made using the infusion technique with Kevlar reinforcements. If the design, as they say today, has a strong family feeling with what it has been in the past, in terms of technology, the steps forward have been many and have resulted in using the very latest available on the market. When we say Bertram fishing boats immediately come to mind, and it must be said that the allure of the new 35 is that, but in a decidedly refined key.
There is a reassuring balance of form, a harmony between form and function that not only pleases the eye with thoughtful details, including those in wood, but also leaves us with the feeling of a solid, marine unit. Let’s start with the assumption that the cockpit (11 square meters!) can be configured as needed and is clearly devoted to fishing given the huge amount of uninterrupted surface area available, the four standard rod holders, and much more. For example, from the platform to access the boat, on the transom we find, as standard, the livewell tank, in addition, of course, to the cockpit access hatch.
Toward the bow, the presence of two sundecks with a rather wide central walkway, however, immediately abutting the interior salon, betrays that more cruising vein that the boat undoubtedly has. The two sunbeds conceal immediately below the two engine 507-horsepower Cat C7.1 which, in this way, are easily accessible for the benefit of convenience of access should the need arise.
In terms of customization, then, one can opt between a convertible flybridge version or one with a classic tuna tower. The Italian No. 1 has the first solution with a hard-top on top for shelter, especially from the sun, since the Bertram 35 is steered from the outside and has no dashboard on the deck.
Therefore, this section deserves a closer look: the elevated position, all the more so when opting for the tuna tower, certainly simplifies glimpsing the eats and allows us to have an unobstructed view of the water, which, from the inside, as far as possible, is never total. In general, however, it is that place where contact with the sea while at the helm is truly real and allows one to enjoy the surroundings to the fullest even in the most leisurely sailing. Thus, on the fly we have triple seating and a central helm that fits into an all-too-simple but elegant dashboard, where the use of wood for some details, including the steering wheel mount, is bathed in the white of the structure that also includes two lockers. Complementing this area is a large instrument panel, which is now more appreciated than ever by sport fishermen.
Bertram 35 FB – Interior
Moving inside the salon we find to starboard a complete and well-equipped galley with refrigerator, sink, and various options that can be installed as needed. On the port side, however, there is a C-shaped sofa with a central table for convivial moments and meals, totally protected. We said before that this hull was born as a weekender and so proceeding to the extreme bow we find a cabin with a double bed on the port side and a settee on the starboard side. Immediately before, separate, the toilet room with sink.
The size of the sleeping area is, all things considered, small, but the quality of the finishes is very high. If it is understood as a sport fisherman, we can say that there is everything needed for a crew to take part in competitions. At the same time, there is also no shortage of those goodies more suitable for a couple on a cruise who wants to enjoy a weekend away. What about at the propulsive level? The thrust on this Bertram is entrusted, as we anticipate, to two 507-horsepower Cat C7.1s with which a maximum speed of 36.5 knots is reached. Even at top speed, the range is good, aided by the 1,173 liters of embarkable fuel. So there is the necessary thrust to go full throttle when the situation calls for it, but around 25 knots we can find that right middle ground between performance and fuel consumption that allows for increased range.
