Spider Foiler is a wooden boat with all-Italian foils where the ‘know-how’ of a yard that has existed for centuries, Ernesto Riva (read more), and the latest technology meet. No, we are not talking about foils, which, as is often observed, have existed for decades. We’re talking about all the technology that automatically adjusts them according to gait, the technology that allows 3D printing of structural parts of the hull and all the studies behind a powerboat of this type.

Spider Foiler

Spider Foiler is the latest project presented by the Ernesto Riva yard and is a 4.7 metre long craft with a width of 2 metres that goes up to 3.5 m counting the foils. Ernesto Riva is a company that has existed for over three centuries and relies on an experience that has few rivals in terms of construction in the nautical sector.

For this project, experience, however useful, was certainly not enough. This is why naval designer Hugh Welbourn, inventor of the Dynamic Stability System, an absolutely innovative foil system that has seen its application on cutting-edge boats such as the legendary Baltic Canova, joined in the development of this motor yacht. He was joined by designer Francesco Manfredi of Cutting Edge Studio and designer Tommaso Lorenzini of the Cantiere Ernesto Riva to give this wooden motorboat with foils all the shapes and finishes needed to make it eye-catching. From a technical point of view, lightweight materials such as wood with a low specific weight, 3D printing of structural elements and a low-power propulsion system (thermal or electric) were essential to achieve all the goals.

Spider Foiler – At sea

This new foil-equipped wooden boat can be propelled either by a ‘classic’ thermal propulsion or by an electric one. With the application of self-regulating foils, this Ernesto Riva yacht can rise and “fly” over the water at a height of 50 cm, reducing consumption and increasing comfort. The yard identifies it as a boat for various uses. It is suitable either as a tender for luxury hotels or yachts looking for an agile and original craft, or as an alternative to a normal day boat. With a length of 4.7 metres and a width of 2 metres (3.5 metres counting the foils), various models are already being studied, which can be customised in terms of colours, materials and finishes, choosing between the thermal (20 HP) 4-seater configuration and the electric (14 kW) 2-seater configuration with sundeck.

Looking at the renderings, for stowage on board a large yacht or for mooring, the two side foils are retractable. In this way they should not disturb when not needed.
