Near Ipswich, on the east coast of the United Kingdom, a hybrid of tradition and innovation has been born, a boat that is classic in its lines and materials but launched into electric mobility. It is the Spirit 35F, an elegant 10.5-meter wooden craft capable of flying at 30 knots on foil and powered by electric motors.

Born from the collaboration between Spirit Yachts (British classic boat yard) and BAR Technologies (a naval engineering consulting firm also based active in America’s Cup), the new Spirit 35F was born not only as a full-electric and full-foiling dayboat, but also as a field of exploration of the possibilities of meeting, precisely, tradition and cabinetmaking mastery with the latest technologies. But let’s take a closer look at what is known so far about the project, which is still under development.

Exterior

Coming to the appearance of the new Spirit 35F, this foiler features extremely sleek lines that recapture the tradition of classic racers, even more evoked by the curves and exposed wood. In fact, the dead work is designed by Spirit Yacht, a renowned builder of classic boats while, looking at the live work, the design is by BAR Technologies, which will bring its experience in America’s Cup simulation and design to bear on the optimal hull shape, using foil technology to minimize hydrodynamic drag and improve comfort and efficiency.

In terms of the deck, the 35(F) offers an open cockpit configuration with 6 seats-two in the wheelhouse and 4 on a settee-convertible to a spider configuration, with 2 seats only. The cockpit, which is present in the open cockpit configuration, then houses a sofa with a central table, and the two seats in the wheelhouse can be facing this, rotating on their vertical axis. As for additional spaces on board, no information has been released at present.

Performance

Coming to performance, the boat is able to rise on foils once it reaches 14 knots, a speed beyond which any hydrodynamic resistance is then minimized, allowing it a cruising speed of 22 knots and top speeds close to 30 knots.

The all-electric propulsion apparatus is designed and operated by BAR Technologies, with the intention of being able to provide a range of about 100 nautical miles and five hours of foiling on a full charge.
