Super Lauwersmeer, the well-known Dutch shipyard, has launched its new flagship: the Super Lauwersmeer SLX54. At 17.05 meters (LOA), the newcomer stands out as an ambitious and innovative yacht, a brand new project full of novel solutions and ‘alternative’ layouts, truly characteristic of a “fresh” approach. In fact, within the last fifty years, the shipyard had never made a boat of this size, a novelty that therefore has required new studies and allowed its design to to break out of the box, allowing for a cruiser with a unique XL interior.

Super Lauwersmeer SLX 54

The Super Lauwersmeer SLX54 was born in the Netherlands, a country characterized by difficult seas and many bridges and waterways. A context perhaps unusual for those used to Mediterranean waters, but that surely  allows and reveals a number of unexpected notes and details. The new SLX54, indeed, takes these scenarios into account and adapts itself to perfection, thus being able to move nimbly both in the Mediterranean and in its homeland’s waterways and open seas. Starting with the arrangement of the volumes in fact, the boat adopts a whole series of innovative solutions, precisely to offer comfort and privacy in different contexts.

Super Lauwersmeer SLX54 – Onboard space

Beginning at the stern, the first welcoming space is a large aft platform, a sort of a hybrid, one could say, between a large cockpit and a clean beach area, it all being well protected by high walls at the sides although open to the stern. Here, any free-standing furniture can be placed and access to the interior spaces and to the ‘fly’ can be found – although the latter one is not really a fly, as soon we shall see.

Immediately glancing into the interiors, one firstly finds a cozy living room, served by a full L-shaped kitchen, sofa and coffee table, and dining area. This space, overlooking the cockpit and the sea thanks to a large opening window, is airy and high-ceilinged, set just above the waterline, a solution chosen specifically to provide privacy when in canals or harbours, thus preventing the view from the outside.

SLX54 – Stern Salon

Instead of having a single open-space volume, this lounge is appears lowered from the bridge deck, which can be accessed via a short flight of stairs. Here one can find the wheelhouse and a second convivial space, served by a table and sofas. Already here the revolution of spaces can be witnessed, starting indeed with this double volume at different heights, which, however, continues further, descending towards the bow, for the sleeping area, and rising half a meter towards the stern, for the exteriors.

SLX54 – Stern

In fact, going up to the stern, one finds a hybrid space, a communion of a deck with a fly, complete with external wheelhouse, cabinet-bar and lounge area. A fly, therefore, that is not really a fly, because it is located only one step higher from the forward spaces, easily reached even in manouvering then, although, elevated above the cockpit, accessible by a ladder as if, instead, it were indeed a fly. A unique solution designed to ensure both large interior volumes and ease of operation, hence multiplying space whilst still allowing for the nice breezy feeling of having a fly.

Returning to the inner bridge deck, going down to the bow, two double cabins can be found (one double and one twin), along with the bathrooms and the engine room – the latter one being large, well organised and surprisingly easy to access.

Engine and Performance

Finally, looking at  the 54’s engine compartment, the yacht offers three options, starting with a pair of Volvo D4 175 PS (10 Kn) and followed by either a pair of Volvo D4 270 PS (12 Kn), or aa pair of Yanmar 6LY440 440 PS (15 Kn). The shipyard, however, announced that a hybrid and an electric-powered version is under consideration a well.
