Suzuki outboard owners know the drill: to check the “health” of the engine and send data to service, until now you had to open the SDSM+ app, frame the QR Code generated by the multifunction tool (MFG) on the dashboard and wait for it to scan. What’s new is that from today that step can be skipped.

Suzuki app: now outboard diagnosis is done via Bluetooth

But let’s take a step back, which all these acronyms can only confuse. What are we talking about? The SDSM+ (Suzuki Diagnostic System Mobile Plus) system is a free app that allows every owner to have a complete report on the engine status on their smartphone: engine hours, service due dates, and vital technical parameters. This data is processed in real time by a multifunction MFG instrument (the digital display installed in the console), which is standard for engines over 115 hp but can be integrated with all those with electronic fuel injection from 9.9 hp.

What changes?

With the latest update, Suzuki makes this communication immediate. Thanks to the introduction of Bluetooth connectivity, it is no longer necessary to access via the QR code on the screen-a system that, in bright sunshine, glare, or rough seas could take a few more tries. Now, data travels wireless directly from the dashboard to the phone, taking advantage of the NMEA2000 network (the standard digital highway over which in-vehicle data travels). The operation is similar to the car’s infotainment system: once the devices are paired (paired), the app recognizes the engine and downloads diagnostic information in a snap.

Compatibility

The best news for shipowners is that there is no need to replace instrumentation: the new software is compatible with all MFG instruments already installed on board. In addition, the classic mode via QR Code does not disappear, but remains available as a backup. This is an evolution that greatly streamlines the control routine, incentivizing more frequent and accurate diagnosis useful both to the user to navigate smoothly and to workshops to intervene more quickly.
