Is the future of boating motorized? Perhaps. What’s certain is that boatbuilders are currently thinking about how to capture new market shares. The hottest news so far in early 2021 is Nautor’s Swan—a shipyard known worldwide for its sailboats—entering the motorboat market. Swan Shadow, at 13.23 meters, is the name of Nautor’s Swan’s new motorboat. And don’t just call it a tender: this is a motorboat with a thousand different uses. Here’s why.

Swan Shadow

“We resisted the temptation to build a motorboat for many years,” says Leonardo Ferragamo, president of Nautor’s Swan. “Then we realized that we could convey Swan’s values through this project as well: elegance, performance, innovation, and reliability.”

While the boating world is a niche market in and of itself, sailboats are only a small part of this small yet significant world. Motorboats take the lion’s share. This presents a major opportunity for a prestigious shipyard like Swan to attract new customers. At the same time, owners of large sailboats often have state-of-the-art tenders—which aren’t necessarily kept on board.

The result is the Swan Shadow, a 55-knot thoroughbred designed as a luxury tender or day cruiser, but also as a fishing boat. It’s well known that today the line separating these various types of boats has become increasingly blurred. In fact, with a double cabin below deck and an optional additional cabin with a separate bathroom, this 13-meter vessel can accommodate a couple for a family weekend. However, by changing the deck layout, it transforms into an ideal boat for a day at sea or, indeed, even as a fishing boat.

The design was created by Jarkko Jämsén, with Roy Capasso serving as project leader and commercial director at Swan Shadow.

Swan Shadow, a modular boat

One of the standout features of the new Swan Shadow is its ability to adapt to different needs—from a tender for a racing sailboat to a fishing boat, as shown in the photo below. In short, a boat for every taste. The boat is a walk-around, but a “double” one. This is thanks to the outboard motors, which are surrounded by a platform that makes it easy to move around the boat, even when boarding from the stern.

Tender, daycruiser, support boat, fishing boat, and even a “limo-tender.” The Swan Shadow is a multi-purpose boat. All this is combined with the clean, elegant lines that have made the Nautor’s Swan shipyard famous worldwide.

The hull features the Swan Shadow’s double redan and was designed using CFD technology to maximize performance. It ranges from a triple 225-cavallo engine setup to three 350-cavallo outboard motors. Top speed? 55 knots. The Swan Shadow debuts on the market with everything it takes to win over a wide audience of boat owners, not only from the sailing world but beyond.
