The Aquaracer collection draws inspiration from sailing and water sports, which have always been an important source of inspiration for TAG Heuer.
In 1967, Intrepid won the America’s Cup in Newport, Rhode Island. It was an important year not only for sailing but also for watchmaking. That’s because a Heuer timepiece played a key role in the victory of the American 12-Meter International class yacht, skippered by Emil “Bus” Mosbacher Jr.
The crew had been equipped with the Heuer Aquastar Regate, which proved to be a crucial tool during the regattas. This achievement was not a matter of chance, but rather the culmination of a journey that began in 1895, when Heuer patented one of the first waterproof cases for pocket watches.
The secret to success is innovation, which lies at the heart of the Aquaracer collection, the timepiece that strengthens the bond between TAG Heuer and the sea. First introduced in 2003, the line has won over the wrists—and, above all, the trust—of many water sports enthusiasts. In 2016, the Aquaracer—while retaining certain signature features such as the dodecagonal unidirectional rotating ceramic bezel and the screw-down caseback engraved with a diving suit—introduced several important updates. Starting with the case diameter, which increased from 41 mm to the current 43 mm. Additionally, the ceramic bezel—which underwent a slight restyling—now features engraved, silver-lacquered numerals. Another brand-new feature is the magnifying lens at the 3 o’clock position, next to the date window.
The sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating protects a dial available in shades of blue and black, on which the hand-applied, polished faceted hour markers stand out; the hour and minute hands are also polished and faceted; while the seconds hand features a tip coated with SuperLuminova™. Water-resistant to 300 meters, the Aquaracer is powered by the renowned Caliber 5, a self-winding mechanical movement. Rounding out the features of this timepiece is the option to pair it with a three-row polished and satin-finished stainless steel bracelet, featuring a polished stainless steel folding clasp.
