For boaters looking to turn their boat into a true floating home, it is crucial to consider a few key elements. Yacht designer Íñigo Toledo told us about his parameters for creating the ideal houseboat. What are the key points to be able to stay on the boat as long as possible?
In short, if you want to go live on the boat or spend weeks at a time on it, here’s what you need to watch out for to really enjoy it.
Who is Íñigo Toledo
Naval architect and yacht designer was born in Madrid in 1967. He studied in Southampton, UK, a hotbed of yacht design talent and founded Barracuda Yacht Design. From the yacht Fortuna that once belonged to the Spanish royal family to America’s Cup projects, his experience in the field is remarkable. Today he specializes in long-distance powerboats such as the Sasga Yachts or Offshore Yachts.
1- Maximize the available space
How important is space in a boat, especially on a small size? Take the case of a 35-footer like the Sasga Menorquin 35. The first rule is to make the most of the space available. This means having a compact engine, an essential aft cabin, minimal corridors, a functional bathroom and a classic forward master cabin. The goal is to avoid unused space and keep the layout simple, without tortuous or complicated passageways. Simplicity is the key to achieving the best use of space.
2 – Light and sight: extension of space
Light and views are crucial elements in expanding the perception of space. A boat with large windows and an interior layout that promotes brightness creates a sense of spaciousness and increases the feeling of available space. Simple, almost basic design solutions help generate a sense of calm that helps to fully enjoy the space.
3 – Simplicity in all aspects
Complexity must be avoided in both interior design and technical matters. A boat that is comfortable at sea must have predictable behavior, with linear responses in all conditions, without surprises. This aspect is essential to fully enjoy the experience of living aboard.
4 – Predictable behavior and safety
In order to live peacefully on the boat, it is essential that the boat has predictable sailing behavior. Mention again the Sasga Menorquin 35. This has a progressive V-shaped hull with a bow angle that is able to cut through waves. This makes it possible to cope with formed seas. Toward the stern, however, the angle decreases for more stability. A stable boat is more maneuverable and also more comfortable. This hull shape ensures smooth passage through waves for constant control in all conditions. It is what is needed to sail serenely when you put a lot of miles on the water and are never sure what sea you may be facing.
5 – Boat not fast, but dry
Top speed is not the most important element. In fact, sailing at 15 knots of cruising speed in these cases is the ultimate in comfort. One element that is often overlooked, however, is how dry a boat is. When you feel safe and stay dry, that is when you start to find the right conditions to stay on board for a long time.
