WHAT WILL YOU SEE?
Thrills and adventure above and below the waters, in search of new worlds to explore and new experiences to live: surfing chasing big waves, free diving in pristine waters, sailing among the icebergs of remote Disko Bay. So many stories of exploration and adventure in remote and wild environments, on which, however, hangs the shadow of man-made pollution, particularly plastic: “When we throw something away,” says free diving champion Hanli Prinsloo, “we must always remember that ‘away’ does not exist.” Are you ready to get on board?

SYNOPSES OF THE FILMS ON THE BILL

The Big Wave Project (Tour Edit)

BIG WAVE SURFING / AUSTRALIA 2017 / 20 MINUTES

TIM BONYTHON PRODUCTIONS

It took five years to make this film, which follows the exploits of a close-knit community of big wave surfers, committed to pursuing a common goal that goes straight to the heart of this discipline: riding the world’s biggest wave. The film brings together the sincere and spontaneous tales of those who daily challenge the most powerful forces of nature, on an extraordinary journey in search of the subtle balance between personal glory, group solidarity and the immense power of the ocean.

Scarlet’s Tale

STORIES / SOUTH AFRICA 2017 / 15 MINUTES

UCT STUDIO PRODUCTION

Achmat is a promising young athlete with high hopes and dreams of representing South Africa at the Olympics. However, all this changes in an unexpected and dramatic way on August 13, 2006, when he first encounters Scarlet, a great white shark over five meters in length. But young Achmat does not know that his encounter with the animal will only be the beginning of a more than decade-long bond that will profoundly change his life for the better

Oceanminded

FREE DIVING / SOUTH AFRICA 2015 / 26 MINUTES

EMIL SERGEL PRODUCTION

Oceanminded chronicles the life of freediving champion Hanli Prinsloo and her dives along the coasts of South Africa and Mozambique. Her underwater journey takes her into the realm of the ocean’s most feared predators: sharks. These seemingly frightening creatures are seen in a completely different light, from which they emerge in all their power and beauty. Hanli’s is a journey that, like all adventures, combines a passion for nature and the risk of experiencing it fully.

Ocean Stories: The Halls

DIVING AND UNDERWATER PHOTOGRAPHY / USA 2017 / 21 MINUTES

PRODUCTION PATRICK CREADON AND GREG GOGGIN

Award-winning filmmakers Howard and Michelle Hall tell the behind-the-scenes story of how they manage to capture images of animals that only rarely get to meet and film. Their ‘Ocean Story’ is the wonderful tale of two people who found their passion in life together: exploring and filming an almost alien underwater world so that we can all appreciate with them the ocean and the life that animates it.

Turtley Addict

WILDLIFE / AUSTRALIA 2018 / 10 MINUTES

TESS BROSNAN PRODUCTION

Every morning in Cairns, Australia, a group of people gather at the harbor for a special journey. They are very different people in terms of interests and backgrounds, but they have one passion in common: they are crazy about turtles and devote their time to doing care and nursing activities at the rehabilitation center built for these animals.

Ai’s Journey

FREE DIVING / AUSTRALIA 2017 / 5 MINUTES

CASSIE DE COLLING PRODUCTION

With world freediving champion Ai Futaki, we will set out on a journey that reminds us of the wonder of our oceans. Filming was shot at the incredible Rowley Reef, one of the last pristine coral reefs located in Western Australia. Here, we can feel transported to another world, where the absolute protagonist is sea life and gravity is absent.

One Breath

FREE DIVING / UK 2017 / 6 MINUTES

SEBASTIAN SOLBERG PRODUCTION

“Magical, mystical, like Zen,” is how Australian freediver Christina Saenz de Santamaria describes her experience of descending into the ocean depths to 82 meters in a single breath. When she is not busy exploring the vivid blue waters in the caves of Mexico or the marine life of Hawaii, Saenz de Santamaria runs a freediving school in Thailand with her husband Eusebio.

Subjacent

WILDLIFE / AUSTRALIA 2017 / 2 MINUTES

JUSTINE WALLACE PRODUCTION

If you think the ocean is a calm and serene world, you had better think again. This short two-minute film is the result of a collaboration between an underwater videomaker, an animator, and a composer. The surreal result shows how ruthless underwater life can be.

Disko

SAILING / UK 2018 / 17 MINUTES

DOMINIC JOYCE PRODUCTION

Olivier Dupont-Huin says of himself that he cannot live without a boat. Therefore, after a shipwreck in which he lost everything, he starts building a new boat from scratch: the Breskell, which will take him to the incredible icebergs and icy waters of Disko Bay. Pristine landscapes and rarefied atmospheres will flow before his eyes as the light of the Great North magically paints everything.
