Today’s trend seems to be to seek hulls that are increasingly capable of prolonging one’s outings, but without limiting one’s desire for exploration and rapid movement between one bay and another or between one island and the next. A trend to which, of course, the market is responding. Into this scenario comes XO Boats‘ latest creation, a new explorer, theXO EXPLR44. Capable of planing at 50 knots, 13.4 meters long and made of aluminum, the Finnish company’s newcomer retains the brand’s typical Scandinavian look, while optimizing its volumes for on-board living. On board, thus, not only wide open spaces, but also two double cabins, for a total of up to 6 berths for weekends and small company cruises.

The intention behind the new EXPLR44 is quickly stated: to offer a marine and safe hull that meets the highest quality standards, but is also practical, fast and easy to maintain. Key points of a design that is thus developed on three fronts, starting with the aluminum hull, which not only lightens the complex, but reduces vibration and increases structural rigidity. To satisfy the performance compartment, however, dual engine options: three 450-horsepower outboards or, two 600-horsepower outboards. Below deck, on the other hand, every volume is maximized, thus extracting as much potential as possible to enliven the cruise.

Before looking at the interior volumes, however, the “open” component also wants its attention. And right here we begin to glimpse the considerations behind the project. The hull has a sporty layout in classic Scandinavian style, with an upright bow starboard and clean lines and freeboard, but, compared to the brand’s standard, the cabin is lowered to shift weights down and offer more stability even in formed seas. Right on top of that, just above the sunroof, is the option to insert solar panels and brackets for loading, be it sports equipment, bicycles or whatever.

Coming to the comfort and relaxation component, however, there is no shortage of dedicated spaces, with a furnished cockpit and large forward lounge. To best marry the spaces, the cabin structure then faced the outdoors through opening side doors, thus uniting the salon with the surfaces, instead, open air.

XO EXPLR44 – Interior

As for the interior design, in this case the intent of the shipyard was to find suitable solutions to exploit every inch offered by the overall volumes. The solution thus fell to creating two large cabins of equal area, one forward and one aft. In the first case, equipped with an en-suite bathroom, the bow room covers the role of “owner’s quarters,” with a large double bed and storage.

Not to be outdone, however, is the second cabin, introduced by a small atrium and composed of modular sleeping solutions, thus offering both a pair of singles and a large double. Of course, also with private toilet.

Lending itself as a convivial space, thus, is the salon in the cabin structure, surrounded by windows and consisting of wheelhouse and sofa with serving table. This, complete with the necessary appliances, will be the heart of “indoor” convivial living, offering a space protected from the elements but still immersed in them.

Motorization

Coming, finally, to the propulsion front, XO offers two distinct options, again outboard: twin 600-horsepower, or triple 450-horsepower combinations. Solution, the latter, capable of flying the EXPLR44 at 50 knots.
