An exclusive event, Casa Harken, turned the spotlight on a new horizon for sailing enthusiasts: accessible exploration. From marine engineering to pure adventure, a dialogue between experts revealed how technology and passion come together to make the dream of sea travel a reality for many.
The latest edition of Casa Harken, an event held at Green Media Lab’s studios in Milan, turned into a unique opportunity to reflect on how the way we explore the seas has changed. With the support of journalist Fabio Pozzo, two prominent figures shared their perspectives: Sergio Cutolo, a veteran of marine engineering and the creative mind behind Hydro Tec, and Niccolò Banfi, an explorer and photographer who has sailed the oceans reaching remote destinations.
The evening’s theme, “The Journey Possible,” revealed how exploration, once reserved for a few daring pioneers, is now within reach of a wider audience. Through a combination of cutting-edge technology, insatiable curiosity and an open approach to the world, modern navigation offers new opportunities for discovery.
When naval engineering meets adventure
Sergio Cutolo unveiled the behind-the-scenes “design” journey, the one that arises in the minds of those who create boats capable of tackling the most demanding challenges. Among his most ambitious projects is the “Maverick,” a yacht transformed into a real exploration platform thanks to structural reinforcements and innovative engineering solutions.
The “Maverick” expedition to the North Pole demonstrated how the concept of travel to remote destinations has evolved. No longer an extreme undertaking reserved for specialists, but an experience accessible to a growing number of enthusiasts eager to experience the sea in total safety, autonomy and comfort.
On the trail of the great explorers
Niccolò Banfi brought the audience back to the most romantic essence of exploration, that accomplished aboard a vintage sailing ship called “Europa.” With this vessel, he sailed some of the loneliest seas on the planet, retracing the footsteps of the great explorers of the past.
In 2022, Banfi participated in an epic expedition between Argentina and South Africa, following part of Ernest Shackleton’s legendary route aboard the “Endurance.” He touched the Antarctic Peninsula, South Georgia and the Tristan da Cunha archipelago. In the following years, he continued to ply the oceans, meeting local communities, documenting stories and environmental projects that testify to the resilience of those living in the most remote corners of the planet.
Harken House: an appointment not to be missed
Casa Harken compared two visions of the sea: one driven by technology and engineering, which makes exploration accessible to a wider audience, and one made up of the direct experience of those who have reached distant territories by less sophisticated means. Two different stories that converge in a single message: regardless of the form it takes, every voyage is driven by the desire to explore, discover, and be surprised.
Casa Harken confirms itself as a meeting place where stories, experiences and passions come together. The next event is already scheduled, ready to offer a new perspective on the world of sailing.
